I am trying to figure out which of these programs to buy and hoped I could get some help. I would like to get something that both my husband and I could do as well as both of my teenage children. We are all in average shape. Going to the gym is not an option for us because of where we live. I have been doing a lot of elliptical and walking outside for the last 3 months and have lost 15 pounds and am now looking to tone up. I really hate weights, I would rather walk ten miles than to pick up a dumbell! I hoped that one of these programs might get me the results I was looking for. How many days a week do you follow these programs? P90X says results 90 days and Insanity says 60. I cannot see on their website how many days a week you are to follow the program. Any advise, opinions, or just information about your experiences would be great!

if you hate weights i'd go with insanity - it's all cardio and you use only your body weight as resistance...

both programs are 6 days a week...insanity is a bit shorter (40 min the first month and 60min the second) than P90X which is 60min - 90min (only yoga i think)...

i can't speak to P90X but i'll be starting it at the end of this month when i finish Insanity - I did Insanity first because i'm the opposite of you - I hate cardio but enjoy using weights - so I did the cardio one while my motivation was high!

I can only speak to P90X at this point...I am in the middle of week 3 of the lean routine (more cardio). The schedule is 6 days of workouts - the 7th being rest or stretching. I also bike for 30 minutes as a warmup. There is weightlifting in this - either with handweights or resistance bands. Probably find for the whole family - good to be thinking of all!

I have not tried p90x but I do have insanity. Insanity is 5 days a week, sundays off, for 4 weeks, then a recovery week, and then another 4 weeks. As the name says, it is INSANE, but it IS doable, you just have to really push youreself. My husband and I do it together, he is in very good shape and he even says it is a CRAZY workout. However I have a 50 year old aunt who completed it, so you CAN do it, its just no fun at all!! There are no weights involved which is why I like it. And the results you will see are amazing. it is the most intense cardio you can do. my hubby is a runner and says this is way worse than running, yet like I said its still doable. trust me if I can do it you can!!!! let us know what you decide! Either way I think they are both awesome workouts!

"I would rather walk ten miles than to pick up a dumbell!"

Being in week 11 of P90X, having sampled Insanity yesterday (will be buying it soon), and going by your statement above...I recommend neither to you. That is, unless you walk those ten miles really, really fast.

Start off with either Power 90, or Turbo Jam. Once you've done those, then move on to P90X (strength training with some cardio) or Insanity (solely high intensity cardio). Whichever floats your boat.

If you absolutely hate weights (I don't see why)...then I suggest Turbo Jam and then Insanity (or Turbo Fire) would be better in the long run. Also, Insanity would be better for group exercises. P90X will require the use of weights and/or resistance bands, and a pullup bar. Unless your family will be working out at different times, you'll need to get equipment for everyone. Not so for Insanity.

I have only done P90X but I have studied about Insanity and plan to buy it this Fall. P90X is six days a week, seven if you choose to do the stretching dvd. It has three days of strength training (weights) and three of cardio. P90X is hard but anyone can do it by modifying the intensity - you can lift lower weights, do fewer reps, do modified moves on the cardio so that you don't jump as high, and such. It has a strong weight lifting core so that may be a "turn off" for you. Others will have to speak to Insanity, but from what I understand it does not involve strength training, but it is very intense cardio. Both of these are challenging programs. There may be better programs to start with, perhaps others can recommend some. I love P90X but it is a commitment to strength training. Are you ready for that?
  • I chose Insanity because after spending $$ on the DVD set, i didn't want to buy additional items ( resistance bands, pull up bars, etc)
