So there are a a lot of well known "healthy swaps" out there. What I want to know is what is your favorite "odd" swap? Something that you normally wouldn't try or haven't really thought of before. For example:

I just made tuna salad w/hummus instead of mayo....surprised @ how good it was.
I also recently had an amazingly good flourless chocolate cake made w/garbonzo beans instead of flour. Still calorie dense, but @ least made w/a complex carb instead of refined flour.

Ideas?

I always swap my oil in baked good for 2 tbsp butter and the rest apple sauce. really good in muffins and breads. Also, I make my own ranch dressing from powered ranch dressing mix and plain greek yogurt. Super yummy and way better for you than regular ranch!

Swapped pureed banana in a brownie mix recipe before because I didn't have any applesauce to swap for the oil. :) They were great! I also swapped two tablespoons of reduced fat garden vegetable cream cheese for mayo in tuna salad. It was amazing to say the least.

I can't think of any more at the moment, but will post again if I do. Bring on the odd swaps!

I replaced mayo with hummus on a sandwich. I think I'm going to try it with tuna fish also. I like tuna but have not eaten it in a long time because of the mayo.

I just threw a can of pumpkin into my last batch of homemade tomato sauce. Ridiculously good!!

I like swapping low fat sour cream for mayo in tuna or chicken salad. I also really like whipped cream cheese or even avocado instead of the mayo.

Everything else I swap is pretty standard. Like the can of pumpkin for the oil/eggs/water in a cake mix. Or applesauce for oils when baking from scratch.
  • Baked kale instead of potato chips, I get the crispy saltiness I'm craving for very few calories!

When I make tuna or salmon salad I use 1/2 light mayo and 1/2 fat free Greek yogurt.

Hmm I've been looking for a relatively low sodium condiment to use instead of mayo. I've been using mustard, but the sodium really adds up. Gonna give hummus a try, thanks.
