Healthy, filling snacks

I've just started this, and I'm finding myself snacking a lot...and it's bothering me. It's like I'm ALWAYS hungry! The snacks I eat are healthy, but apparently they aren't filling because I have to go eat something else afterwards. I think part of it could be that I'm so use to eating out of boredom after school, so I'm trying to teach myself to eat one little healthy snack after school then WAIT until dinner...but I can't...I just get really hungry and all the food is so tempting. So far, after school TODAY, I've had some cheerios (dry- 2 servings), a 90 calorie pack of Buddig Turkey (it's 9 slices of thin-sliced turkey), and I'm currently eating some Club crackers.... :embarassed: It's like I have no self-control. I'm hoping this snacking doesn't continue. I hope that I can control myself from eating so much after school.

Anyway, what are some good, healthy, filling snack that you recommend so I can hopefully just eat that after school and be set until dinner??

ETA: I know Club crackers aren't super healthy...they just sounded really good and I wanted something salty (but not chips). I'm naughty. :ohwell:

how much water do you drink?

When I think I'm hungry I drink water then that feeling goes away... but if it persists I grab a small snack.

I like mixing yogurt and granola. Not exactly low-cal but very filling! Also, Quaker quakes rice snacks are really good and hold me over for a couple hours. And Chewy bars! 90-100 cals and good for at least an hour.

I swear by Clif Luna bars. They are quite filling and definately one of the most nutrious bars out :)
  • You should also maybe try and keep some water with you. I know when I drink a lot of water, it keeps me full longer. Also, try popcorn. It's so airy, that your mind gets tricked into thinking you've eaten more than you have!

As an afternoon eater myself, I suggest drinking water and going for a walk. Allow yourself one pre-planned snack that has some carbs and protein (i eat a piece of light toast with a tsp of nutella) (or you could try an apple and peanut butter). Or a 1/2 a banana and a serving of almonds. Then, after you eat that snack wait to dinner. I remind myself that I'm not going to starve in the next 2 hours...even if it may feel like it!

In the beginning you probably are going to feel like you're really hungry all the time because you're body is so used to getting so many calories and now it's not so it needs to adjust! It's also the thought of eating and the habit of doing it! Try drinking atleast 2 glasses of water first and then wait about 10 minutes before you start snacking. If you're still hungry you may be better able to gauge how hungry you really are and what you want to eat. I try to drink a glass or two before every meal to stop me from overeating! As for some snack, I like to have a piece of fruit with string cheese or yogurt, or maybe even a small salad of nothing but veggies. Doing this will help you get your daily need for fruits and veggies in as well which is a good thing! I also find that maybe a piece of whole wheat toast also helps to fill me up a little, but only when I REALLY need it! :)

My 2 most satisfying snacks are wholegrain toast with a teaspoon of peanut butter (140ish cals) or a tub of low fat/sugar passionfruit yoghurt (70cals). Both taste yum and keep me going for longer than other things

I didn't realize water was so filling. I'm not getting my 8 glasses of water a day in anyway, so I'll definitely be sure to do that before snacking. Maybe I'll just start carrying a water bottle.

And yes, I eat out of boredom, I always have. I need to distract myself with something....like exercise or something beneficial instead of just hopping on the computer or watching TV.

There are some great suggestions on here! Thanks everyone!!!

Try drinking a glass of water.. usually it's from thirst but when I'm hungry but not ready for a meal i grab a special k protein shake. I have all three flavors (chocolate, strawberry, vanilla) and I love them! They are amazing and keep me full for a while and they satisfy my sweet tooth :) Oh and for salty chip cravings I get those snack bags of sunchips. they're 140 calories and the flavors are good. I learned that I have a problem with portion control :/ but those foods help!

Oh I was wondering if those Special K shakes were any good...thanks! I'll probably just buy a bunch of Special K snacks, lol. And food with lots of fiber. But mainly I'll focus on drinking lots of water.
