Protein shakes/powders?

I'm not really sure what they're FOR. Are they more for strength/muscle training, or are they good for weightloss too? When is the best time to use it and how much? Also, any brand recommendations would be great. Thanks!

  • I'm using New Lifestyle pre-made shakes because my life is really busy and I can't always prepare or find healthy meals. They taste awesome (no chalkiness, aftertaste or other unpleasant taste) and they're only 100 calories, and 4 carbs.

    Depends what kind you get.

If you get a type of Protein shake - it might be a meal replacement
But you can also get other shakes, like Muscle Milk that will help rebuild your muscles faster after breaking them down during exercise!

I tried using muscle milk but I found myself gaining weight after the first few weeks because of all the muscle I was gaining! - I'd suggest doing it in small bursts, like 2-3weeks at a time.

The purpose depends on the shake.

They may be supplements, meal replacement, or for building muscle.

Protein powder allows a person to increase the grams of protein they eat and not add a lot of calories. One needs to be careful there though since some protein powders have a lot of fat and carbs which defeats the purpose of eating them if you are on a calorie reduced diet. I didn't used to use them when I started, but one day when I was really feeling all my working out in a negative way one of my MFP friends told me to eat more protein. I added shakes, and it made a huge difference. They help keep me feeling full, and mixed with some other stuff make a wonderful post workout meal.

Protein is a necessity for the muscles to help heal.. But they can be used for a meal replacement as well.. Just make sure anytime your taking added protein you drink plenty of water. It will shut your kidneys down otherwise...

yes they are good I use them

they are great way to do low carb quick meals
or in addition to a meal with a salad or a ham and cheese roll up

I have the eas 100% whey powder 13 carbs and protein galore which is good for a pcoser
    and I even add peanutbutter
I make it with vanilla coconut milk by the brand so good or valio milk which is lactose free awesome tasting milk that has half the carbs of reg milk the coconut milk is 9 carbs and the valio is 7 i think and reg milk is 13 carbs

don't do all meals this way it tastes good awesome even and at sams club they sell this stuff cheaper than a health store or a vitamin store but it gets too regimented like a slim fast plan
  • Thanks for all the responses! I'll be looking for a good shake this weekend. I'm sure Costco will have something at an affordable price
