Ever done the BodPod?

I went to a continuing education course today and the instructor said that body comp was a better measure of increased strength than 1 rep max (which I totally agree with). He feels that the best way to measure that is the BodPod. I found out that the University of Utah offers this service and I'm really interested in doing it. I was wondering if anyone out there had done it and how a skin fold estimate compares...?

The bodpod is the "gold standard" in body composition. Next would be underwater weighing. If you have the opportunity to do the bodpod I would take advantage of it.

It's so ironic that you posted this topic, because I was literally just looking it up since Henry Ford Medical Centers offer this service not too far from where I live. It is $65 for a 25 minute consultation and then the measurement.
Not sure if I'm going to do it yet, but if I do, I'll post the results in this thread. I've been working out hard, and I'm sure hoping that I'm growing muscle, 'cause the scale sure isn't moving.

Yeah. I totally get the scale not moving :) I think the university offers the hydrostatic weighing as well which I have always been interested in. I think the BodPod is cheaper and I think I'd like to do a now and later measurement.

Okay....I did it..........I went to Henry Ford Medical Center in West Bloomfield, Michigan to have the Body composition test (The Bod Pod) done.
I was very pleased with the results and will now be curious to see how they compare to the results at the gym testing tomorrow (using two forms of bio-electric impedance.

You are required to remove all clothing, jewelry, glasses, etc. and wear a very form fitting compression style swimsuit and skull cap over your hair. Then after they calibrate the pod with your information and a test weight, you sit relaxed, inside the pod for three separate readings, which they then average. You can see out, and other than a slight noise, and a little fullness in the ears, there is nothing to hear. The total of the three tests takes only about 2-3 minutes....45 seconds for each test.

Then a report was generated. I was told that my Body fat is at 26.7% which I'm happy about......I've been getting readings of 33% at the gym, and will be interested to see what the reading is tomorrow at the bi-weekly measurement.
The other thing I liked about the test is that it gives you an estimate of your RMR (resting metabolic rate), and mine is 1,216 kcal/day. This tells me that a 1200 calorie baseline is too low for me, and given my current level of exercise there are DEFINITELY some extra calories in my future! Yahooooo!!!

So....bottom line....I'm very happy with the information that I got, and now I have a goal to work towards.
I'll try to report back about the comparison after I get measured and checked tomorrow.
The cost was $65 and the tech recommended not checking back for at least 3-4 months, so they weren't trying to push monthly visits or anything.
    Hope the information is helpful.

    Thanks for the review!
  • Great Review! I'm going to make an appointment to have the test done in West Bloomfield as well. Now I know what to expect.
