Ordered Out and counting cals/nutrition....

We ordered out tonight from a make-your-own pizza place tonight. Basically you go there, choose your sauce and toppings and you're on your way to bring it home and bake. Their website actually gives a detailed PDF of their ingredients... I'm just contemplating whether to really go through and painstakingly add it here. Especially when I'm unsure really of the amount of toppings they put on it (measuring)... ugh!

What I had: thin thin crust (partner and I split a 14" pizza, and I ate my whole half so 7"?) plus: olive oil as the base, mushrooms, feta cheese and spinach.

Thinking about it, we're leaving to go out of town in a new city where we will be eating out the *entire* time. This weekend will be hard for me to track like I've normally been :(

That's all, I guess I just needed to rant. Any suggestions? How do you all cope or deal with stuff like this?

I usually get take out on friday nights. I try to find a best match in the database, estimate servings, and stay under for the day so i have a buffer...
  • A lot of places are getting better at putting their nutrition information online or they may have handouts at the restaurant. You could always try to plan in advance (even though that is hard in a new place) or at the very least just promise yourself that you will make good choices! Keep the attitude that this isn't a short term counting calories type of thing to lose some weight...it is a lifestyle change and you will be faced with many many more of these situations in the future! Good luck!

I'd try to at least estimate, it's better to over estimate rather than under estimate. Then work it off really hard if you do eat something like that and it'll make you feel better.

I went out for dinner tonight at Symposium Cafe and they don't even have nutrition facts! I was kind of annoyed at that but I got something pretty easy to calculate (breakfast) so I entered in that in the calculator and I'm pretty sure I overestimated since I picked things that were close to it but the highest calories in the database.

Even if you don't want to, I'd put it in just so you don't stray too off track. If you know where you're eating out when you go look at the websites, most of them have nutrition facts so you can estimate that way!
  • My advice for you is too NOT get stressed about this....
    1. That will only make losing weight harder... my mom used to stress about her weight a lot... then she stopped and commited and is doing wonderfully.
    2. Estimate your portions but definately keep track... if i cant get a good idea of the nurtition for somewhere I won't eat there and that doesn't cut out too much... But I feel better know exactly what it is that I am eating.
    3. Leave extra calories/workout... just in case and so you will feel better!

Restaurants like IHOP and Bob Evans have items specifically listed as healthy options and include the calorie counts. The children's menu at IHOP also lists all the calorie counts. You can use that as a guideline, as well as their recommendations on how to make menu items lower in calories. Salads with the fat free dressings are always a safe choice. Steamed vegetables, or a combination plate made with lower calorie vegetable sides is also an option. I'm sure there are other restaurants that do the same, I just don't go out that often. Chinese take out restaurants usually have a section of healthy steamed vegetables which should be much lower in calories as well.
