Am I making a mistake?

I've been trying to lose 1 lb a week and losing about .8lbs a week. I really, really wanted to be at 200 or below by my birthday and I realized there is no way I'll get there at this rate. Also, I looked at my food diary and saw that I'm still eating a lot of sweets and desserts - clearly I could cut calories and still get my protein and fiber and veggies and such.

So I changed my goal to 1.5lbs a week. I plan on going back to a slower rate after my birthday, but if I lose at that rate I'll be at 200 when I want to. I know it's an artificial goal, but I'll be going to ConCarolinas the day after my birthday and I want to walk in feeling fabulous and ready to talk to editors and agents about my book.

Am I being foolish? Losing 1.5 a week doesn't seem like too much to ask for, but maybe I need some perspective. What do you guys think?

1.5 a week is a totally reasonable goal! And psychological milestones (birthdays, anniverseries, whatever) are not a bad reason to push yourself a little harder. Especially when your goals are attainable! Go for it!

depending on how much weight you have to lose and how much you are burning each day, you can lose 1 or 2 pounds per week safely. good luck!!!

Definitely not! It's a good goal. I had it on 2 lbs/week until I was within about 20-25 lbs to goal, because it had started to slow down, and I actually needed more calories to burn & changed it to 1 lb/wk . Good luck!

If you were losing .8/week while still eating sweets and desserts then 1.5/week is very doable.

The healthiest max weight loss rate is 2lbs/week so you're good to go.

I'm at 1.5lbs per week (according to MFP) and average .5-2lbs in actual loss. I vary my calorie intake and exercise routine fairly frequently, though. I don't think 1.5 is too much, but make sure you're cutting out the right things (and adding in the right things). Keep in mind that weight is still just a number, and might not reflect all the changes in your body if the scale doesn't move much. :)
