So, I should basically eat what I want every third day. Hmmm. I do love trail mix, and cheese. I have been seriously limiting them. Thanks :-)
no you still try to eat healthy, the 3rd day is ok to have a small treat but it is not intended to be a free for all day. For those who are set to a 2lb/wk loss that is the lowest you should be gunning for, so do 2 days on the daily goal and maintenance on the 3rd to maintain a high metabolic rate. Long periods on high deficits (1000 cals or more a day) will slow down your metabolic rate, true that those whom are obese can get away with it for longer periods but even obese ppl can succeed doing the zig zag using that method I said. For those with 30 or less to lose a 2 lb/wk weight loss goal is simply to much for effective fat loss. The goal is healthy fat loss, not killing yourself on the low days.

Great thread! Quick question, do we eat back exercise calories or not?

yes you do eat them back, all calories were net meaning eating back the exercise cals so that on your home page it shows the net amount equal to your daily goal, no need to alter your daily goal just eating 2 days under it and 1 day over it.

    Sorry, I am still confused.
If today I have 1660 calories, exercise and burn 200, do I eat 1860 calories total? Is the zig-zag number what you will eat, plus do you still eat back your exercise calories? Maybe I am confused because there is no "net calorie" section, only a "goal" and "total" on my food page.

I'm still not following entirely!! I'm quite new to this. My goal is set to lose 2lb a week at the moment and it's 1200 cals. If I drop it to losing 1lb a week I get 1700 cals. My weight is currently 200lb. I'm exercising 4/5 days a week and burning between 300 and 400 cals each time. Can someone explain a bit simpler for me please??

    Marking for future reference =D.

I'm still not quite sure why one site or another will have nearly 700 calories worth of difference when it comes to what maintenance is (which directly affects loss and extreme loss)...but what I've decided to do is aim somewhere between the two lowest (MFP is ALWAYS the lowest).

I think maybe this will be the ticket for breaking through this plateau I seem to be on. The last 10lbs is rough. Yesterday I ate 2000+ calories (I changed the weight loss setting to 1lb/wk, which made for 1850 calories, plus 200 or so exercise calories), and today I'm 3lbs heavier than I was last Monday lol. I understand my body has to adjust though, since for 2+ weeks I've been existing on 1530 calories thinking that I could use the 2lbs/wk setting on MFP.

Anyhow...thanks for the post...spells it all out pretty black and white!

has anyone gained weight in the beginning by zig zagging calories? My max weight loss is 1200 cals (max deficit 600cal) im afraid upping my cals to 1800 a couple days a week will make me gain weight
