I never thought I could do it

When you started this weight loss journey what was something you never thought you could give up, or change? Plus what is something you still need to change but haven't made it that far yet?

Like for me I never thought I would be able to give up sugar in my coffee, or miracle whip on my sandwiches! But I have learned to love Splenda and Mustard as an alternative. What I still would like to change is the late night eating, some nights I still don't eat dinner till 9pm

sugar caffiene, etc. i havent given up any but i can go long bouts without it and not crave it so that is a huge step for me and has helped me to drop some lbs
  • I never thought I could give up full fat cheese. I used to eat tons and tons of it. Now, I've been finding healthier alternatives. Laughing Cow is lower in calories, and I've learned to love it.

I wish I could change my carb cravings. I've decreased the amount that I eat, but I still constantly crave it. What I wouldn't give for a few slabs of thickly cut white bread. Mmmmm. But I guess that's what got me into this situation.... :)

Definitely sweet tea and sodas for me. Not so much the sugary sodas but the Diet Cokes and Coke Zero. I just want to drink water all day. I still have my morning coffee though.

Whipped cream and bacon (not together!). I sometimes have a little splurge, but not at the quantities I was eating before. And I don't even really miss it... Well, I miss the bacon a little.

You know the coffee kind of works as a appetite suppressor for me so I sometimes use that if I'm hungry but know I don't need nothing to eat.

I do the same thing. Coffee in the morning, and water the rest of the day. Sometime I will sqeeze a diet coke in there but not always.

I haven't given up anything yet, and I'm not sure if I'll ever give anything up entirely. Instead, I plan on cutting down the amount of Junk food I eat and eating more healthy foods.

:noway: Headed to the grocery store after work! LOL
  • I'm going to have trouble giving up cream in my coffee for sure. I just don't enjoy it with milk, but I'm find with powder whiteners so I'll find some that's low fat. Changing from 3 sugars to 1 is going to be tough. And I work at a convenience store, so guess what I have to munch on when I need a snack? Junk food. Lots of it lol. It's going to be difficult to avoid the temptation. I'm also going to have trouble getting into using my treadmill every day. But it needs to be done, or I'll never be able to have a family so I have some EXCELLENT motivation!

Pizza I love pizza and its the worst for me. I think its a little easier, knowing how many calories pizza has, to give it up. But it is still hard!!

Well that's a good start I said the same thing when I first started this, I'm just gonna cut back I wont deprive myself of nothing, but after awhile I just wanted to do whatever I could to reach my goal faster.

Bread- bread, bread and more bread! I LOVE my french rolls, sourdough bread & garlic bread. Monday I started really cutting back and eating more fruits/veggies for my healthy carb intake but ooooh how I miss my white toast! I didn't have nearly as hard a time cutting out my daily Starbucks vanilla latte (300 cals by itself!) or my coca-cola.

Without a doubt, fast food. We used to have fast food at least once or twice a week. I haven't eaten at a true 'fast food' place (Subway is about it, but I control what goes on that, so I don't consider that "fast food") in almost 2 years now.

I also have not given anything up entirely - I enjoy everything I like, just in moderation and not nearly as often as I used to. I found from my past attempts at weight loss that if I cut out something I like entirely, I find myself obsessing with not being able to have it and then I would end up eventually gorging myself on it. Now when I do splurge on something, I savor it just a little longer and find that I actually enjoy it just that much more.
  • I gave up candy bars, bad sweets, etc.. I found better alternatives. Edy's has an amazing slow churned ice cream and I'll eat only 1/4 cup when I need something sweet. Besides that, I still eat what I want. It's all about portion control. I still go out to dinner but review the nutritional value and make sure to log all my food in before I eat it. I think it's terrible to completely deprive yourself of the things you crave. Instead of the entire thing, just portion it out so it fits into your day. I've lost 34.6 pounds this way so, I guess I am doing something a little right, lol.

I guess the biggest surprise for me has been how dedicated I've become to working out. I never thought I'd be a "gym rat," that annoying person who works out ALL THE TIME, but I am that person now. One thing I'd like to change in that regard is that I want to become a runner. I do lots of cardio, in addition to weight training, but I have never been a good runner. That's my next fitness goal.

Food-wise, the biggest change I've made is that I've completely given up fast food. Haven't had any (at all) in nearly 15 months, and I probably never will again, unless I'm forced to for some reason. Even for my cheat meals, I just can't bring myself to eat fast food, no matter how much I crave it. What I'm still working on is giving up sweets. Like another poster said, I've been able to do it for stretches, but then I always go back to it just to "treat" myself. My biggest weakness is wanting something sweet at night after dinner, just out of habit. Working very hard to break that.

I've never posted anything before, but this topic really jumped out at me, lol. Although being heavy my entire life, I've never really tried to lose weight until now. I was content being as I was because I am medically healthy. My doctor marvels at the fact that I am the size I am and thank God I don't have diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. I am within normal ranges medically. It wasn't until recently that I had an ephiphany when looking in the mirror and I realized the person looking back at me didnt look like the person I feel I am on the inside. That was the moment that everything changed for me. So On March 21st I made a change that I thought I would never do and I haven't looked back.

On a more fun note..... I loved salads with Ranch dressing and cheese. Now i've switched to a reduced fat italian and occassionally I reward myself with a sprinkle of cheese when I've done a really big workout. I've only be doing this for 2 and a half weeks now but I don't miss the ranch at all! Now the cheese is a different story.

I totally never thought I would be able to give up candy (of all kinds) but I have......I haven't had any candy in going on 12 weeks and for me that is unheard of!! Candy is the one thing that will send me off on a binge faster than anything so instead of risking the binge, I have decided to completely stay away from it altogether. It's still all around my house, but I haven't any!!

I think there are two very specific things that I need to work on, but I am just not ready to let them go quite yet. #1 creamer in my coffee.......I have switch to sugar free and I don't use sugar, but like another poster mentioned, I just don't enjoy it with milk. #2 is diet coke. I only drink once per day but I know I need to get rid of it completely because it is so bad for you!

I also never thought I would be consistent with my exercise but I have exercised 30 mins every day for the past month and that's a big deal for me. Sometimes I am working at past bedtime but I get it done anyway!
  • I am still really bad with candy & chocolate of all kinds. I try so hard not to buy it because if it's not around the house then I stand a chance at not eating it, but once I buy a box or bag of something it is usually gone in a matter of hours...

How do you all stay away from the bad things you crave?

I never thought I'd get into running, but I'm doing 2 to 2.5 miles 2-3x/week now. My goal is to be able to run 5 miles by Halloween.
