Another HRM error question

I have a chest-strap HRM and it seems that while the heart rate seems accurate (I have verified by taking my pulse the old fashioned way) the calories burned calculation seems way off.

For example, I am 5'6", 38 years old and weigh 163, 40 minutes at avg heart rate of 142 - and my HRM tells me that's 150 calories.

This link tells me it's 349. http://www.braydenwm.com/calburn.htm

The latter seems more reasonable, don't you think?

The average person burns 100 calories per mile. Do you know how far you walked? A nice brisk walking pace is a 15 min mile, so I'm guessing you walked about 2 - 2.5 which would be closer to the 250 calories burned. I think 349 is high unless you were booking pretty fast.

MTA: I don't know why I'm just assuming you were walking. You could be running, which would be a higher calorie burn. But if you were doing some video tape, I couldn't tell ya which is correct. I would error on the side of the lower one.

This was a circuit training session - weights with no breaks between sets - so I push myself HARD.

For a HR of 142 I think the 349 sounds more accurate....

I usually average, regardless of running or spinning, 100 calories burned for every 10 minutes worked out. Does that make sense? What does MFP say?
