Ok so a friend asked me to sign up for a 10k race in July and i need some advice on whether you runners out there think i will be able to train in time for it.

I am currently on week 4 of the Ease to 10k programme ( having previously completed C25K) so have 6 more weeks until i complete it and it's 12 weeks until the race. Im still carrying a lot if extra weight and running quite slow (8.3kph on treadmill) so i wondered if you think i would be ok to sign up and complete this race in a reasonable time with 12 weeks to go??? At the moment i can't cover that distance let alone speed up but with training it may be possible.

Would appreciate any advice, thanks

Yes. Sign up. 12 weeks is PLENTY of time to get ready. Don't worry about how fast you are, what your time is or anything like that. Just focus on completing the race, even if you have to walk for part of it. Enjoy the experience but definitely sign up!!

The one piece of advice I will give you is make sure you have a good pair of running shoes (if you don't already). Go to a store that specializes in running and have them fit you for the right pair. They will analyze your stride and footfall and help you get an appropriate pair for YOU. The right shoe makes a world of difference in comfort and performance while the wrong shoe can potentially lead to injuries.

Good luck and have fun with your 10K!!!

I agree, get fitted for shoes and don't worry about your pace. If you take the training seriously, you have plenty of time.

I'm with the others on the shoes and also agree that you have enough time.

The only thing I'd add is that if you have been training on a treadmill so far, start getting a few outside runs in when you can (preferably not on concrete) because the mechanics of running outside will stress your body differently.

Thank you for your replies. Ok i will sign up and go for it, with the mindset of just completing it.

I am in need of a new pair of trainers so will get some of those. I tend to alternate between running outside in the parks and running on the treadmill. I find the interval training easier on the treadmill but once i get to running longer distances in one go again i will get back outside.

The Ease to 10k program is really good so hopefully this will see me though.

    Thanks all.
