Todays NSV...!

By a lot of peoples standards this is probably somewhat un-impressive. But today, I RAN 1.25 miles....!!! To me, this is HUGE..! Throughout my life, and even since starting the commitment to get myself in a healthier place, I have had the mantra that "I am not a runner". This has been with good reason - because I DON'T RUN. I used to run track when I was in school and I hated every second of it. I literally haven't run since I was a teenager. (And I'm 40 now so you can do the math)
I have often wondered if I was in a life or death situation in which I had to run or I would die.....what would happen? And pretty much the conclusion I have come to is that I would probably die...LOL!
I have no issue (or fear) of circuit training with Jillian, weight lifting, walking oodles and oodles of miles, or pretty much any other healthy way to get my body moving - but running.....yeah, not for me. But here is the problem - I have realized that I am defining myself and boxing myself in by telling myself that I can't and don't run. Why? Why am I not a runner...? I usually use the excuse....DUH, asthma...! But that's ridiculous because I do Jillian DVD's like nobody's business and that doesn't affect my asthma. Then I realized it's a mental block for me. I told myself that I'm not a runner, so that's who I believe I am. BUT NOT ANYMORE...! A mile and a quarter (and yes, I am counting that quarter) is majorly impressive for me, and guess what???
I AM A RUNNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Woohoo!
I've had the same breakthrough recently. I always hated running, and the only time I ever ran was to make up skipped gym classes 20-some years ago in high school.
It's amazing, isn't it?0 -
That's awesome! I'm very impressed. I too am becoming a runner even if I kick and scream along the way. LOL I can't get a mile yet but it's coming. Keep up the good work!!0

That is a major mile stone for you. It is cool to see how, no matter what age we are we can still redefine ourselves. It is like every day is indeed a new day. So, yes you are a runner. AWESOME.0

I started running about a year ago. I HATED running. The only reason why I started was to train for the 3 day breast cancer walk. Now I have run in 2 half marathons and a couple of 5K's : ) I now look forward to it. It's my time to get away and think. Some days I feel like I can go on forever!0

That is the hardest thing to get past! Once you get past the mental block of "I can't do that" then you can do anything! I used to tell myself that and now I have finished a 5k, a 10k, a half marathon, and am now training for a marathon!0

thats AWESOME!!! funny story... there is this guy on my page. hes always updating his stats with running and jogging. i posted on it one day and said... i wish i could do that. i just cant run. he in return said... why not? something that simple. so i was on the treadmill the other day walking of course, and i thought about that conversation. that was a week ago. that day i decided i would run. last night, i RAN three miles!!! never in a million years did i think i could do that! and it was something so small. just him saying... why not, that made me think... well maybe i can! just wait... by the end of the month, u will be running with ease. it actually makes me feel great! and my new mini goal, is to run in a 5k charity run by the end of the summer! so yes... ur NSV for the day is HUGE! and congrats to ur wonderful accomplishment!0

I did the same thing a few days ago. I decided to go for a walk and told myself..."what could possibly happen if you ran from here to that stop sign?" So I did. That was .5 miles. I was (literally) shocked that I was still alive and no body parts fell off. So last night I went for a walk again and I tried it again. I did .8 miles - but I stopped half way and walked .2 miles. So I woke up this morning and I decided that there is no reason that I needed to stop and walk that .2 miles and I wanted a "re-do' so I went and did the same path and this time I wanted to run the entire .8 miles. Well...when I got to the .8 mile mark I was so happy and I told myself "okay, now just go to that sign up there" and when I got to that sign I went to the next sign. Next thing you know I was home....!
Start little...that's what I'm doing. Baby steps are better than no steps at all, right?!0 -
that is awesome!! one of my fitness goals is to run a mile, which i get is nothing to some people, but ive aways told myself im not a runner. but like you, i can do the jillian michaels.
way to go!!0 -

Wow...you are my hero...! That is awesome!0 -
Congrats!
I was the same way! I HATED running...Why? well because I never did it. I rain my first 5k last year with my friend...I didn't train or anything I just wanted to tag a long...I did pretty well for my first one 33min. After that I did 2 more 5ks. I remained around that time. I continued to run and ended up being able to run 7 miles without stopping...I actually began to enjoy it! Now I can't wait for the warm weather to do it again!
There is nothing that we CAN"T do...we either choose to do it or not. The only reason we hate something is because we never do it!
Plus, running is cheap and easy..no gym membership required, no nothing! (well, shoes) so when all else fails...its the go to workout!
AWESOME JOB and KEEP IT UP!0 -
That's a great achievement!
I too have always said I am not a runner. I am not even a jogger! I have even said those words to my trainer who just gives me a look like "Yeah, right." He pushes me to walk as fast as I can on the treadmill and my walking has gotten faster. Now I'm starting to think that maybe I can jog - it's all a matter of how do I begin? My goal this week is to try jogging, after all - what's the worst that could happen!0 -
That's fantastic! I am also in a smiliar situation; could walk for miles and miles, but always hated running and only ran in high school when I had to (and I'm 42)...preferred sprints because they were over sooner! LMAO Then about a month ago, I decided I wanted to start working out with a personal trainer...never imagining that she would incorporate running into a strength training program. Well, she did. It was a gradual process, starting with run/walk intervals, but I ran a mile w/o stopping for the first time this week! That inspired me so much that I actually ran 2 miles w/o stopping yesterday!! It's truly an amazing feeling to realize that you CAN do something you have been telling yourself you couldn't do. I'm running a 5K next month, and I truly believe that I will be able to run the whole thing!
PS I agree that the first 1-2 miles are the hardest; it's like I need that to get my body awake and ready to run...so I'm thinking that I may be able to do a 10K this fall!
Congrats...you should be VERY proud of yourself!!!0 -
Great job and don't let go of the UP feeling you have. It will get you through more than you can imagine. When I was in high school when running came up I wished I was invisible. To this day I still hear - go you chicken fat - go. Fast forward many years. In 2004 I weighed 281 lbs. Through diet and walking I took off 100 lbs. Then for two years I couldn't lose an ounce. On Jan 1, 2007 I started running on a challenge from my niece to run the Turkey Trot in November. My first run was in May of that year - a 5k for Susan Komen. I had done it - I had become a runner! In 2009 my husband asked what I would like for my 50th birthday. I asked for the time and his support to train for a half marathon. The day before I turned 50 I finished a half marathon and still am inspired to know that I have no boundaries - I can do anything if I really want to. As a regular at the gym now - I am just short of 52, weigh 163 ( the high end of my range) and have a body fat below 20%. I choose not to run as often as I prefer the muscle from weight and cardio training but I still let loose everyone in a while.0
