Am I doing the ab routines incorrectly? When I do situps, it hurts my tailbone as I'm getting up and I end up having to stop. Does this happen to anyone else? Anything I can do about it?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!!

Lay on a pillow, maybe? :)

Your tailbone should never hurt doing abs. You only need the lower part of your back on the floor not your butt.

Also which helps, do half sit-ups (aka crunches) which also focuses on abs. Once you pass the half way point, you are using your hip flexors.

you aren't doing them right. Also try other core exercises.

Agree with the men, sounds like your are either coming up too high and doing them wrong. I like 'crunches' better, my back is what I call sway lol it is hard for me to lay flat on my back and have my back flat on the floor so I have to do a modified version to keep my hips and back down.
Just crunch halfway only raising your shoulders off the floor see if that works...good luck!!

You might have incorrect form, but a workout or yoga mat might be helpful for you. I was having pain and bruising on my spine after ab and floor exercises so I went out and bought a mat, since then all of that has disappeared.

Try looking up some exercises that work your transverse abs instead of sit ups. The transverse abs are the deepest layer of muscle, they are the ones responsible for holding in your organs. If you tighten them up your stomach will be flatter.

If you're just doing crunches and sit ups then yes you're probably coming up a little to far. If you're following an ab routine and doing a bunch of different exercises that hit all you abs and hip flexors then it's probably not your form.

You can try and put down a little padding. I've got some interlocking foam pads that make up the floor of my "workout room", and they seem to be doing a pretty good job of cushioning my tail bone. :-)

Yes, I agree, don't completely sit up when you are doing sit ups. Not good. Just do a variety of crunches.

Thanks everyone - looks like I was coming up too far when doing situps. I'll be doing crunches instead!!

Get a mat. I got these from Nefitco and I run on them, do abs on them, everything. It's THICK and works well.

    http://www.nefitco.com/interlockingfloormats28mm.html

That one should give you 4 interlocking mats. Try it, you'll like it! I LOVE MINE! I even bought a bigger set from them!
  • This site might help you with the form and help with other areas as well.
    Good luck
