Can anyone help with knee pain?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this question on or not. I have been doing serious cardio for well over a year. (on and off my whole life) And since I began the online circuits and Jillian Michaels strength training dvds my knees are absolutely killing me. The pain keeps me up at night sometimes. Is there anything I can do to help this? I am finding as time goes on that it is getting worse.

Stats-doing Jillian for 2 months regularly and adding in some light cardio on the treadmill a couple times a week too. I tried those knee bands under my knees but they are doing nothing for me. I have about 10-15 lbs to lose so not terribly overweight. And no troubles at all through the years of cardio.

Thanks,
Tricia

If it is high impact it could be arthritis. Do you get stiff after sitting for a bit? Any swelling? How is your range of motion? Start with your primary doc to find out what is going on in there

It didn't even begin hurting until I started strength training. Cardio never affects it. I've worked out my whole life but am just now beginning the strength so wondering what that could be.

If you ask any ortho, they will say all the serious circuit training is horrible on your knees. If you have some bands....do a google search on exercises for Osgood-Slaughter - i will have strength exercises for your knees. Any cardio, you should stop all the jumping until your knees are better.

Doing Jillian vids gave me knee pain and swelling too after a few weeks. I noticed it for the first time during level 3 of the Shred. I went out and got two thick knee braces that are made for athletes and I wore them for 2 or 3 weeks straight any time I was doing a video or jogging or just feeling like my knees needed more support. At first I thought I would have to wear them for the rest of my life while exercising, but I've now gone a week without wearing them for anything. I just put them back on for exercise any time my knees start to feel a bit "off" and they seem to take care of the problem for me.

Oh, and Jillian's "rock star" jumps are killers. I don't even try them anymore and just do butt kicks or something a little lower impact.

If your joints are sore, there is something going on. You should not train with the type of pain you seem to be experiencing without seeing either your primary care doc or an ortho - if the pain is sufficient to keep you up nights. Pain is teh way our bodies tell us something is not right. There is the normal response a day or 2 of minimal discomfort as our bodies adjust to new routines, new stresses etc. However, teh type of pain you are describing could be a muscle tear or strain adn continued stress could result in a more significant and longer term injury.

Use the RICE recipe to help recovery after tough workouts - rest, ice, compression and elevation. But a trip to your doc might be the first thing to do.

I can tell you that my Dr. recommended using a recumbent bike for exercises due to a bad knee and it worked wonders.
  • I made it to Level 3 of Jillian's 30DS, too, and my left knee is killing me now! Sunday night after the workout, I had to take ibuprofen and it just continued to worsen - waking me up at night! Two days later and it still REALLY hurts, so I have not been able to exercise for two days. Bummer. I think I just need to take on lower impact exercises until I am lighter and my muscles/ligaments/tendons get more used to exercising!
