I just learned the food diary entries in search are not always completely accurate. I was wondering if the exercise search is also entered by members or are they checked for accuracy? I want to lose weight and get fit but if I'm putting in false information it seems I'm sabotaging my success without even knowing.

i've wondered that too...i always double check the food info if i have the packaging, but you have to put a lot of trust in some of the generic food items and exercises...

The exercise database is somewhat generalized and can be inaccurate, or inaccurate for YOU. It largely depends on your personal stats (height, weight, age, etc) and the intensity of your workout. If you want to be more precise, it is recommended you get a good HRM (heart rate monitor) or something like a Bodybugg or BodyMediaFit. However, keep in mind that ALL of these things (MFP, HRMs, etc) are estimates. Some will be closer than others, but there is no way to precisely measure energy intake or expenditure.

If you are really concerned, it may also be of interest to get your RMR tested. Many gyms do it. Just do a search for RMR testing in your area. Usually about $50-100. But then keep in mind that it is sort of a "moment in time" measurement. As you lose weight and gain strength and endurance, your metabolism changes so the amount you burn on a daily basis and in purposeful exercise will change as well.

I think it's the same with the exercise diary.

I'm totally with you with feeling a little frustrated, because if I'm already doing all this logging and stuff it might as well work for me! I often do a quick search for something I'm looking for, and there are other sites out there that have you put in height, age, weight, etc and then it will tell you estimated calories burned. I try to find 2 or 3 answers and judge it based on that. I know it's extra work, and believe me I like to keep things simple but sometimes there are things on here that sound totally off!

Now I know to double check my numbers with at least one other source. In any case I'm loving this site for the tools and support. It has made previously insurmountable challenges fun and completely do-able.
