Fruit and carbs

So I'm keeping my net calories at 1200. My nutrients I'm trying to keep at protein 125, carbs 75 and fat 25. My problem is I'm really missing fruit! I still eat some, but if I gave in I could easily exceed 6 servings daily. That's a lot of carbs!! I know it's "good" carbs, but I still feel guilty if I go over 75 daily. I think cost of the guilt comes from being so successful on the days I eat 50-75. I have lost 6 lbs in the last 10 days! How can I successfully balance my diet to include fruit (and maybe even a little bread!) and not go overboard on carbs?

I have at least 2 fruit servings, plus one or two "bread" carb options per day and typically stick right around my 135 per day.

I have switched to the weight watchers, or the dempsters "smart" whole wheat or multigran breads, slices are a bit smaller but you can actually have 2 for only 100 calories and the carb content is not off the charts. Added to that I often will have some whole wheat couscous, brown rice, or a weight watchers whole wheat hamburger bun with dinner.

You can still have what you enjoy, but portions and daily portions are important. Six fruit servings per day is too much, even for something "healthy" like fruit.

Well, if you keep low carbing, think of how much weight you'll lose once they remove your gall bladder because it's full of gall stones you've created from an inappropriate diet. Sure, the organ itself is only a few ounces, but the endless pooping and improper digestion you'll experience forever once your bile regulator has been removed will be certain to get you to your goal weight in no time.

Ok, I'm off my 'post gallbladder removal due to low carb dieting' podium. There is no need to stay at a 75g/day carb limit. The reason you lost so much in so short a time is because of the water you've shed once you've depleted your glycogen stores by low carbing.

Enjoy your fruits. They have 'good carbs', fiber, not to mention all those great vitamins you need to have a healthy body. If you are concerned about carbs, ingest protein along with them. Or fiber. Both will slow down your metabolization of the carbs and will keep you fuller, longer. It's not the amount of carbs you need to worry about, it's how quickly your body metabolizes them, causing a spike in your blood sugar. Eating carbs along with fiber or protein will slow down the process of digesting the carbs, essentially ushering them out before your body can make use of them as readily as it could without the protein/fiber.

The carb/protein/fat amounts I described are those set by my doctor. Don't even try and convince me that doctor's are "wrong". I have certain issues that restrict me to that specific carb intake. That is what's healthy for ME. I understand that 75 carbs may be too low for others, but for me it's perfect. Also, a diet isn't technically defined as "low carb" until it's under 50 carbs/day.

Anyway, I do agree that 6 servings of fruit is too much. I just LOVE fruit. I'm often over the recommended daily vegtable servings as well. I'm really trying to find a balance. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing!

This could have been helpful to know from the get-go. Without this kind of information anyone with any knowledge of nutrition (even me and I have almost none) would say your carbs are too low and that's why you're craving. I would say try not to jump down people's throats who are wrong solely because you didn't offer enough info, but you can't help it. Being under on carbs causes people to get a bit snarky (not just saying that to me a smart@$$ - it's true).

FWIW, a TON of doctors are wrong! I don't know about yours but MAN have I met too many with their own agenda on health and medicine and usually it's what's easy for them. :-D

On the fruit/carb/bread thing. Can you search for some whole grain bread recipes with fruit *in* them? Maybe a small piece of that a day will curb the cravings?

Definitely not trying to jump down throats. Things on the Internet never come across the way they're meant. I'm actually in a super good mood today! :flowerforyou: I know a ton of doctors are wrong, but I trust mine completely. Also, I just don't want to be told what I'm doing is unhealthy when I know it's not. I only said that for clarification, not to be rude. I appreciate your input though. I know carbs make me happier!

Actually a low carb (or controlled carb) eating plan is any plan where the carb counts are under 150 per day.

Do you like berries???? Berries are very low glycemic.

Also, go look at a glycemic index and look at the fruits where the glycemic index is 25 or lower............there are more fruits for you to eat.

As far as vegetables go, there is hardly a such a thing as going over too much on veggies unless they are the higher carb, starchy vegetables.

Then ask your doctor instead of people on a message board. Jeez. Enjoy your fruit cravings....

and FWIW, my doctor put me on a lower carb diet. Another doctor, the one who removed my gall bladder, told me i could thank my nutritionist and doctor for putting me on a lowered carb diet, which is what caused my previously gallstone free gallbladder to need to be removed after being on said diet. So ya, doctors can be wrong... I had two professionals agree to put me on a diet that was harmful to my health. I put the info out there to help you not be in the same boat, but whatever....

Could you exercise more and burn off some of the excess carbs?

I'm all for loving the low carb life too since I have Insulin resisance, but tellthat ot my kidneys since low carb and more protein and no balance gave me a bleeding mess and a 7mm and an 8mm stone that had to be blasted.

Now I think balance and lots and lots of water with lemon since the citric acid helps flush the kidneys too

I know how you feel. I usually keep my carb intake around 124g per day, and some days I will mix it up and go a lot lower than that. I don't like to eat the same amount every single week, I like to keep my body guessing. I never seem to get fruits in enough, mainly because sugars/carbs, I like my carbs to come from oats or those whole wheat thin bagels ( only 24 carbs!) but sometimes, I will include blueberries in my oats for breakfast, they are a great boost for metabolism and feel like a "lighter" fruit to me, if that makes any sense haha. I always feel like they are lighter than and orange or strawberries. Some days I will also include a serving of fruit with my protein shake after my workout, as that is one of the best times because it helps your body use the protein to fuel your muscles faster then.

And as for your overall carb intake, what works for you may not work for someone else. I have tons of people tell me that I don't eat enough carbs, but that is the point where my body physically and mentally feels its best. I don't feel cranky or irritable, and I have healthy bowel movements. I really think a healthy eating lifestyle is about trial and error, its best to find what works best for you, not necessarily what different things have worked for different people. Good luck :)

I'm not sure why everyone mixes and matched thier carbs/protein/fats ratio's all around.

Just try and stick with 1/3 of calories from each macro every meal...then "feel" the difference.

    ;)

One example would be a meal containging 30g Protein, 30g Carbs, 13.333g Fat. - Good carbs, like vege's/legumes. good fat's, like those found in avocado, almonds etc. 360 cal's. 120 from each macro. Google "Dr. Sears Zone Diet" No-one really fails on this one...unless they are lieing. ;) and were'nt sticking at it.

No carb, or really low carb <50g is like Ketogenic. Its okay, for a while, but was never intended for long term use. In fact doctors put kids on these diets when in hospital for conditions i cannot remember right now...? lol.

    Its unnecesary though.

To the girl who's boyfriend is not eating carbs....
    W...T...F.
Slap him up side of the head.
Why is he doing it? Does he exercise?

We are not a one size fits all people..............Her doctor has her on a lower carb plan for a REASON. The OP stated this at least 2 times.

I would gain weight fast and furiously with 30% carbs, 30 fat and 30 protein. 60 percent carbs and protein would have my body in an insulin secreting state that would not be healthy. I am thinking the OP is in somewhat a similar situation as myself and many others.

And I DID gain weight from the Zone diet, and NO I was not lying and was sticking to it. This is some very closed minded thinking to say that if the "Zone diet" didn't work they have to be lying or not sticking to it.

And Doctors put children and adults on long term ketogenic plans for several reasons. ADHD and Epilepsy are 2 known reasons to put someone on an all natural and ketogenic plan.

And unless the boyfriend of the one poster is eating only meat, fat and water he is getting carbs from somewhere. I have found that what people call "no carbs" is not actually NO carbs........
