How long have they been hurting for? After a good core workout, my abs can be a little tight for a few days.

Also, what is your goal with the crunches? There are a lot of abdominal exercises that are more effective for strengthening your core. This book has a whole chapter of them:

I used the Women's Health version of the same book (http://www.amazon.com/Womens-Health-Big-Book-Exercises/dp/1605295493/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b), and found it very helpful. Or, if you belong to a gym that offers it, Pilates works wonders for the core!

When I do my reverse crunches my abs feel it every time, even after all this time but it's not a bad feeling, simply feels like I'm getting a good workout in. Be sure you're holding in your abs and breathing properly to get the full effect.

    Good luck!

it means you are finally giving those muscles a work out. they are finally feeling the burn. my old personal trainer (when i could afford it) would have me do three sets of 15 and on the 15th with each set she told me to hold the crunch position for 15 seconds holding my muscles in. holy damn did that really burn. it hurt to stretch the entire next day, but that is a good thing. you want to be able to feel the burn the next day, it means its working.
