Setting goals with expiration dates!

I am a newbie, so I am an information sponge!
I see lots of goals and ### lbs by such a date goals. Do you find putting time limitations for getting to a certian weight helpful or harmful? I know that it completely depends on the person and the personality. If I set a date goal and don't achieve it, I feel like a failure and send myself into a cycle of overeating. I know it helps quite a few people.
I just want opinions! There are no right or wrong answers, but your reasoning may help me to see things a little differently!

I have been thinking a lot about this and I plan on starting to set goals for myself, though I have not done so in the past. I think I have shied away from them out of fear of not reaching them, and then being disappointed, but then I'm not really losing weight the way I want to WITHOUT them either. I think that setting and then MEETING the goals, as long as I set realistic ones, will help boost my self-confidence. Congratulations on getting banded by the way. I got banded but never learned the right way to eat so enojyed lots of weight loss early on, but then gained it all back and then some. Now, with the help of this site, I am learning NOW what I should have learned THEN, and starting to lose again. It IS easier now than it was trying to lose weight BEFORE surgery, but still. I wish someone had pointed this site out to me the first time around!0

I don't set a certain date to acheive a weight by, but I do set rewards for weight gain. That way if I reach a certain weight goal I get a reward but if I don't do it in a certain time frame I will not get bummed out or try to over do it to make sure I get it either.0
