Late night exercise...Yay or Nay?

Okay...so I am just now at 10 pm getting my running shoes on and heading to my treadmil...and lately I've found that this is normal timing for me? I can't seem to get my lazy butt up early in the morning...(I already have to get up by 5:30 to just get to work...so to put in a good work out, plus shower, I would have to get up at like 4:30) I just can't seem to do it...I have set my alarm but always turn it off. My question to everyone is this...Are my workouts pointless? I'm I busting my rump for absolutly nothing? I would like to think these late night workouts are better than nothing...but I'm not getting results. I really need some opinions on this...I really like to work out....but with the type of work I do, my rest is very needed. And I literally "crave" that last hour of sleep. Help me!!!

If it works for you. I used to do it. It fit beautifully into my schedule at that phase of life. Golds gym late evenings. A lot of neighbors went that time too. Now mornings fit better. Do what works for you. I didn't have trouble sleeping after. : )0

I think it's better than nothing! I just can't do it because I am a morning person. If I exercised late at night I would 1) not work out hard because I would be afraid the toothpicks holding my eyelids open might puncture them and 2) I would probably not be able to fall right into a sound sleep. Either from the exercise or those puncture wounds.
I don't know that the time of day necessarily has anything to do with results (???).0 -
No worries! I agree, workout on your own internal clock...I like to workout in the evenings as well! Stick with it...you'll get results...stressing over not working out in the mornings might be what's keeping you from realizing your results.0

Some medical experts say that late night exercise may interfere with sleep, on the premise that expending energy breeds more energy and therefore a person might have a hard time dropping off to sleep after working out.
I can attest to this, in that my kids always got MORE hyped and unable to fall asleep up after a bout of jumping on the beds and pillow fights just prior to bedtime. :grumble: The popular myth is that kids running around before bedtime tuckers them out, but I found the opposite to be true for my kids - it energized them.
The best barometer of how it works in your case is - "How do YOU feel after a workout? Are you ready for bed shortly afterward?" If so, do it. If not, but you have the luxury of not having to worry about bed time after a 10pm workout, do it.
Otherwise, if you are pressed for bed time shortly after workouts and you just can't drop off to sleep, at least you'll know why and perhaps you will have to figure out how to manipulate your schedule to accomodate an earlier workout. Me, I cannot fathom getting out of bed at 5 am to hit the gym, shower, dress for work and get to my desk by 9 am. I work out at 5:30, right after work.0 -
I run at night because that is when I can do it without my kids running too! I like the quite time for just my hubby and I to run...The pounding of my feet hitting the pavement...nobody asking me...for instance the questions during water aerobics with my class and daughter today...
- "Who invented God?"
- "What is the purpose of a Jelly-fish?"
- "Why is salt water salty?"
- "Can you put your hand in your mouth underwater without drowning?"
- "Is there such thing as a pig with wings?"
Ya...It was entertaining...I think I burned more calories saying SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! than working out.
Last night when I ran, I actually had a thought from start to finish! And it didn't even involve an animal talking, something sticky, or something stuck! YEY MOMMY!

Whatever works to get your heart rate up! Right?0 -
I had this debate yesterday.
So my friend's position is that people who work out in the morning are much more likely to stick with it.
My position is that I am more likely to stick with it if I go at night!
I am like you an can't drag myself out of bed early to work out. I am no good for a few hours in the morning anyways. I like to work out after dinner, but still an hour or two before bed... a little time to let the energy wear off.0 -
