i am currently 19 years old. about two years ago i weighed 194lbs at 5'5". i lost about 54lbs, and was pretty happy with my success, it was the thinnest i had ever been. i achieved that success by exercising on an elliptical around 6 days a week for a half hour or so. of course i had to work my way up to that amount of time when i first started it was a chore for me to do 15 min.
i maintained my weight for about a year and a half or so and then started to slowly gain it back. i started working everyday after school not leaving much time for me to work out and my eating habits started to slip. eventually i followed the trend of everyone else in my family and started smoking cigarettes when i was 16. i smoked for two and a half years while my weight slowly climbed back up. i forgot to mention i started eating out all the time, there was never any food in our house so i bought it somewhere...big mistake!!
this past august i left for college for my first year, within three days of being there my boyfriend and i quit smoking, i made the move to do it. we didnt have jobs here and i didnt want to stress about not having money for cigs and i felt sick every time i smoked one, like guilty sick. so we quit but by the october or so i had reached my heaviest weight of 206 lbs!!! i swore i would never let myself get that big.
so here i am today roughly 179lbs, trying to lose weight for the right reason instead of just looking good. i am currently working on my running skills. i have never been really good at it i have always hated it so now i am making it my number one priority. so far i run about 1.5 miles nonstop and then walk the same distance back. today i will be trying to add another .3 or .4 miles to my run!!!

You are doing great! Just keep plugging away, on the running (you'll get there!) and on the eating habits. Good things don't happen overnight - you are young, establish a good routine now and you will lead a very healthy life. Way to go!0

Looks like things are going great! But intense cardio and calorie restriction (running is intense cardio) will cause a lot of muscle mass loss along with fat mass so get in some weight lifting/strength/resistance training to so you can preserve (or even increase) that muscle mass. This is what makes your metabolism. And make sure you are getting plenty of protein (also great for you muscles). This will become more important as you get smaller and closer towards your healthy weight.

Also read through "Links in MFP you want to read again and again". You will find a lot of information there regarding starvation mode, eating back your exercise calories, etc.
Congrats on the quitting smoking! You are stopping at a good time. Quit before the addiction gets out of hand. I'm still fighting this issue.0 -
