according to MFP i should have a calorie intake of over 1600 can't remember the exact number unless i go back and look. Went to the doctor today and she recomended that I stay around 1400 with less carbs and more protein. What do you guys think? Should i listen to the doc or to MFP. THis is just a general practioner doctor and not a specialist.

ALWAYS listen to the doctor! MFP is great but it's generic. Your doctor knows your health history.0

I personally would say MFP, but that is contingent on if you are confident in your settings/ starting information. Most importantly were you accurate with your activity level?0

MFP has been really accurate for me. The thing you have to consider is that your eating less calories to lose weight so yes you will probably lose quicker if you do the 1400 over the 1600 but it may be easier for you to step down to 1600 and then to 1400 once you are used to it. I am doing 1200 and then eating a bit more on days where I exercise (which is basically everyday) and it is working wonders for me. Just be careful you dont want to starve your body of food or nutrients. Make sure to take your vitamins too. Oh and green tea is a great way to speed up your metabolism.0

I had a doctor who told me to eat 1200 calories a day... at 350 pounds. I would have literally starved myself that way and burned muscle, not fat. She was an idiot. So doctors aren't always right, but yours may be! Depends if you trust them. I left mine shortly after.0

If You dont Trsut your GP then I would recommend asking for a referral to a nutritionist (so its more likely your insurance will cover it)
there's 2 sides.
MFP is based completly on generic information based on the questions you answered, if you were not completly truthful then it is likely your caloric intake could be kind of high.
ON THE FLIP SIDE
IF your doctor has recommended a weight loss program and wants to see faster results your GP could be recommending a lower calorie level so the weight comes off quicker. OR Your Dr has seen something in your blood work that indicates you need a lower caloric intake.
If you are uncomfortable reduc your caloric intake slowly, this will also help you adjust to which low calorie foods are more filling for you to make it easier. AND you wont feel as guilty if you use some of the 200 calorie difference between the two recommendations0 -
I lost all my weight consuming 110 grams of protien and 100 or less of carbs, usually around 80 of carbs.0

1200 calories a day is very reasonable, so long as they are high quality foods, lots of extra lean protein. I started at almost 300 pounds and consumed 1000 calories a day but, again, I get 100 grams of cargbs and at least 110 grams of protein--so I am constantly in a fat burning state---which is how I was able to lose 93 pounds in 7 months.0 -

It can be for some people, true. But for me it was setting me up to fail. I tried it, and failed. It was too much of a drastic change for me at that time in my life. Congrats on your 93 lbs lost!!!0 -
Thanks everyone. I do trust my doc. I think I am going to try to stay with her recommendation and see if i can do it if not maybe I will try in the middle of the two so about 1500. We will see.0
