They're all 100% useless. Honestly, spend time lifting heavy weights and doing short burst HIIT cardio. Ab work does nothing to remove fat. It's a scam.

OP is right. You don't NEED ab exercises. Do compound moves that use your core (like squats and lunges) and having a good diet is KEY.

I do MAYBE 50 crunches/situps a week as part of my workouts...usually I do knees to elbows hanging on a pull up bar. You do not need machines to work your abs.

I have an ab rocket, and its much easier to do a sit up with it than if you were to do one on the floor. That being said, I think they can be completely useless as well. You can't spot reduce fat so doing 1,000 sit ups a day isn't going to give you washboard abs. Stick to cardio for awhile to help shed all the fat first, then work on training your ab muscles with plank moves etc. Jillian Micheals has some great workout DVDs for that.

Should you want to do ab workouts, there are plenty of free videos or routines that you can do without the need for an ab machine. One of my favorite videos is 8 minute abs (was made in the 80's or 90's I think). Look it up on youtube. A free routine is www.twohundredsitups.com
