How Do I Lower My

I recently decided I was going to track my sodium, and OMG I can’t believe there is so much sodium in things. I don’t usually add salt to the food I’m eating; there’s just a lot already in it! I know eating fresh reduced the amount of sodium, but that’s not always something I can do (cost play a role in this.) I’m noticing that products that are canned (I buy a lot of canned beans, tomatoes and salsas) have a ton of sodium in them, is this because it helps preserve it?

I guess I’m just looking for ways to help reduce the amount of sodium I’m consuming in a day. My diary is open, so please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to lower this.

Thanks for your help! :flowerforyou:

Whenever I used canned beans or corn, I always rinse them in a strainer to get the sodium-laced liquid off. And yes, it is a preservative. However, I eat a really healthy diet and go over my sodium almost every day. As long as I'm drinking a lot of water, I don't worry about it too much. That said, if you have blood pressure issues, consult you physician about the best low-sodium options.

There are options for both canned beans and tomatoes that have no added salt. Eden foods I know is one that makes no salt beans. I find those at Whole Foods. Diced tomatoes and tomato sauce are easy to come by in no salt added varieties (Muir Glen and Hunts both make them). I've found no salt added crushed tomatoes harder to find. The best brand I've found is Bionature which is also sold at Whole Foods.

There are low sodium canned options, I eat them daily for lunch.

Then I add balsamic vinegar and hot sauce for taste.

Low sodium selections + balsamic vinegar + hot sauces = TASTY!

The CDC recommedation now for sodium is actually 1500, so it's worse than you think....:ohwell:

You can see where the problems are in your diary, right?

Basically, almost anything that comes in a package has added sodium.

    Cheese and dairy
Jif (you can buy natural, unsalted peanut butter at any grocery store)
    Pizza
Frozen or deli meats or packaged or frozen meats and vegetables
Canned vegetables and beans (I buy dry beans and I don't salt them)
Breads and cereals - check the levels
    Baked goods
    Sauces in jars or cans
    Dressings and some condiments

I have been switching from canned veggies to frozen... does frozen have the same sodium issues?

The flavored ones do. Plain ones do not.

This is the line that I eat almost daily:
