Your body will some defined number of calories per day. Let's say its 1500. If you eat less than that per day you will be at a caloric deficit. If your deficit becomes 3500 calories, you'll lose one pound of weight.

Follow the process of setting how much weight you want to lose. It will tell you how many calories you should eat each day. The number at the top in green of your home screen is how many calories you have left. No need to worry about the deficit - MFP has already factored this in for you when you set your weight loss goal.:flowerforyou:

Deficit is basically "negative". Your body uses a certain amount of calories each day to function (You can find that number by calculating your BMR, you can google a few sites that'll give it to you)

Say your BMR is 2,400 calories a day,

    if you eat 2,000 calories

You have a deficit of 400 calories.

Does that help? It's definitely confusing, haha [:

keep in mind when you set up your MFP settings and select how much you want to lose...1 lb a week 2 lbs a week ect...it automatically sets up a caloric deficit for you.
So just try to stay around what MFP says you are allowed Calorie wise and you are good to go.
selecting a 1 lb a week loss will automatically set a 500 calorie a day deficit for you so that after 7 days you have a caloric deficit of 3500 which will take off a pound.

BMR is not your maintenance calories, everyone should eat their BMR.

What idreamincolours means, is that your maintenance level is 2,400, and if you eat 2000, you have a deficit of 400. Your BMR is likely around 1200-1500 and you should never eat below that.

Your BMR is the amount of calories your body burns by just breathing and digesting all day, so it needs those calories.
  • Thanks everyone! Your comments really cleared everything up for me! I appreciate it!!!! :flowerforyou:
