I just started doing cardio a few days ago. I am not physically active other than just running around doing errands. So i do 30 mins on the stationary bike. I use a sweat band around my tummy, I do sweat. I check my heart rate on the machine but I don't think its working properly. Sometimes it reads this super high number where my heart rate is and I don't feel out of breath. How do I know if I am getting the most of this machine? since I"m usually not out of breath when I"m done, but I am sweating. Can someone give me some pointers? or advice?

I would not trust the numbers on the ,aching. Invest in a good heart rate monitor, preferably one with a chest strap.
  • Increase the resistance. It sounds like you don't have it high enough! I do the stationary bike a couple of times a week - I sweat like crazy and breathing is heavy!

The heart rate monitors on the bikes are notoriously unreliable and inaccurate. When I'm riding, it will range from 74 up to 180, when my heart rate is actually at 115-120.

Get heart rate monitor, preferably with a chest strap (telemetry band). That will give you a more accurate reading.

Oops, that should say machine ,.....
  • yeah the HRM on most machines seem to always be wrong. what i do is just check my own heart rate periodically throughout my workout to make sure its staying up in the 130 area. but i do it the lazy way and just count for 15 seconds then multiply by 4. i can't be bothered with real monitors or straps and stuff ;)
