Where did that dead horse go? Oh, here he is!

Sorry, I have just seen this so many times:tongue:

    lol
This dead horse keeps coming alive.
Was it not just last week we seen this same thread?
    Oh sorry
It wasn't last week we saw this same thread, was it?

Grammar's bad, but I believe the same meaning came across?

I wholeheartedly believe that we need to have at least one thread a day regarding the grammatical errors of the community. I know my day isn't quite complete until I've read a thread all about the proper way to spell and phrase things. Go Grammar Police! /sarcasm

Have you ever considered that maybe some people just cannot grasp the differences??

I am graduating in a couple of months and have been offered a masters degree in Psychology starting next year...so I must have some sort of intelligence. Always top of the class with spelling but....

I am AWFUL with apostrophes! Something just doesn't click with me!

I have two English degrees - a BFA in Writing for Publication and an MFA in Creative Writing - and a freelance writing business. I can't for the life of me remember how to correctly use "effect" and "affect." I have to look it up every single time I want to use either one. And believe me, I have looked it up often enough that I should know the difference.

I am going to start spelling it the wrong way each and every time I use it now. Knowing that it makes people loose their mind

    Seriously?
We ALL see those errors and this issue HAS been on here many times. Just move on. Don't be THAT person. No one really cares about spelling here. I just don't think it is very supportive to nit pick...

If the OP seemed to be unsupportive, you may want to reread the post. Your post appears to be lacking in support to me, especially since I am a person who cares about spelling (and grammar, and tone).

However, I do understand that the spelling appears to be a small concern to you. Since so many of us only "talk" through our typing, though, it can be a big deal to others.

I mean, yes this is a topic that has been discussed time and time again, but so has basically ever single other topic on this site. Why the freaking out over this one? Stay away from this thread if the topic is so offensive...just like I avoid every exercise calorie thread :)

    I, too, grew up under a grammar-tyrant.

But I think that, as with speaking, there's a degree of code switching that has to go on in forums. If I was typing an email to my father, I'd use proper grammar. If I'm typing to a friend, sometimes I abbreviate stuff. Whatev. (Case in point.)

If I see two students speaking in the hallway who use "ain't" with each other, I won't correct them, since they're talking to their friends, using a colloquial "code." If they do it in my class, I'll mention something to them individually, but never call them out. It can be a super touchy subject, especially when language is tied so closely to identity. It's also been inextricably tied to intelligence and level of education, which aren't always

I guess my point is that I find this to be a 'safe' place where health is at the forefront of everyone's mind. So, it's definitely ironic and maybe hypocritical that I'm even responding, but I think that maintaining an environment where everyone feels welcome is more important than maintaining grammatical scrupulosity. I wouldn't sacrifice one for the other.

    ...

...and LOL @ watermelon. Loooooves it.

Has anyone even considered the possibility of English not being everyone's first language... or does the interwebs solely belong to English speaking countries?

I have the Ron Popeil rotisserie where you "Set it and forget it." Then hit it with the hammer that was used to beat the dead horse.

    Hey everyone!
Not wanting to be too pedantic, but if you were raised by an English professor, would you also have been taught not to write the word 'Hey', as this was originally a form of verbal exclamation and has since become a slang word commonly used as a verbal greeting, versus a written salutation?

    Just curious.......

Unfortunately in today's online and mobile culture, there seems to be less care and attention paid towards basic grammar and spelling, this was highlighted when a friend's child showed me an English assignment which had to written in SMS language. Shocking, I know! What hope does the English language have?

and another note on the title itself - you were REARED by and English professor, not RAISED. we RAISE pigs, we REAR children.

I think the OP was just pointing out something that bothers her and chose the forums to rant. Is this post in the wrong forum? Yes. But that doesn't mean she should be chastised for bringing it up. I think this topic is being taken way too personally. It's no different than ranting about someone using the exercise machine you want or a co-worker bringing cake to the office. Will that stuff ever stop? No. Will people stop confusing loose with lose? No.

As a side note, what happened to "if you don't have anything nice to say then don't post?" Can't we at least be adults here? If you don't have anything positive to add then why take the time to make a comment?

    Excellent observation!

Really people? Who cares in the end if someone makes an error on a message board, will it effect our weight loss or ability to workout? No? Then why bother continuing to berate people on this same topic over and over again. Don't we all make mistakes/typos from time to time? I know I do!
