Why is it, when my over weight friends make constant excuses as to why they dont want to work on losing the weight now, that I start to feel exactly how I did before I made the lifestyle change to lose weight?

Its like when folks get out of jail, they are told not to hang with the folks that they hung with when they got in trouble the first place ;-)

Because food is a drug and it's easy to fall into bad patterns than it is to keep up with your good choices. Just remember what it is that YOU are going to accomplish and if you have to - get new friends.

My friend is 4' 11'' and weights over 200 pounds. I feel so bad for her and want her healthy but she just cussed me out because I care about her getting healthy. Makes me want some ice cream, but I refuse to open the freezer where I know its waiting.

No, she cussed you out because SHE ISN'T READY to get healthy. It really had nothing to do with you at all!

You've taken steps to get healthier and she knows it. Because you have, now all of the excuses she gives herself seem terribly flimsy. She does have enough time, she's not just naturally fat, she can exercise, she can make different food choices, etc., etc. You are now a reminder to her that she is lying to herself every day. It's obviously made her quite uncomfortable.

I'm sorry that she said painful things to you, but she was really angry with herself.

You can't 'make' anybody do anything. Lead by example continue your journey they will see through your example. Make it a good one!!

    Very well said..
There's been tons of people that will state the same thing (usually it's spouses).
If the person is not ready yet, you can't force them to start.

    Lead by example.
Perhaps you can ask her to join you going for a walk? Something simple to start things off.
  • I can relate. As I slowly lose the weight, I have had friends suggest maybe I have an eating disorder and I'm getting anoxeric. AND THEY ARE SERIOUS! I have only lost 20 lbs, I need to lose at least another 15-20 to be in the range my doctor recommends and now this is the pushback I'm getting?

It just reminds me change can make people uncomfortable with themselves and I need to be ok with that. I'm on the path I want to be on for me and I hope someday they find the path for themselves. If not that is ok, too. For them. Not me!

Through this I have learned who my true friends are, and it sucks to find out this way. But life goes on and the diet will continue.
