My dream vacation is 3 1/2 weeks away! (Kauai, Hawaii) ***Happy Dance*** I'm wondering how I'm going to stay on track....I'm going with 11 other people and I know there is going to be lots of food in our house. Should I still log my food/exercise here or skip the week? Should I make an effort to exercise while I'm there? Part of me wants to forget EVERYTHING while I'm there but I don't want to get back and have gained a bunch of weight! Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks! :)

I just got back from Kauai about a month ago! I was there for 2 weeks and didn't gain a single pound. I didn't log my food and exercise, but I definitely made an effort while I was there! Eating will be far easier than you think -- buy fresh fruits from the farmer's market (not sure if you're staying on the north or south shore, but if you're on the south shore there's an awesome farmer's market and a whole foods store right there in the Kukiula shopping center) and eat the fresh seafood. Obviously indulge every once in a while, but walk the beach, walk up the mountain, etc. and you'll find that exercising and eating fairly healthy is far easier than you think!

If you have access keep logging everything. If not at least write it down on a piece of paper so you know exactly what you are eating. It will make you think "Gee, do I really need that". Go for a long walk/run on the beach and keep active. I spent 4 nights in DC on a class field trip and managed to get in exercise and even though our meals were preplanned I didn't gain anything. Good luck and enjoy your trip, sounds like a lot of fun:)

Have fun and enjoy yourself! I lived in Hawaii for four years. Still miss it. I would still log your food in. You will splurge on some items but I think if you are tracking it, you won't have just one big week long splurge. You might not want to go to the gym, but you are in a beautiful place. Take walks. Swim. You will get your exercise while loving your vacation.

In the past I have had a lot of success on vacations. I let myself have as much alcohol and desserts as i would like, but I make sure to get in enough servings of fruits, vegetables, dairy, protein etc that I was getting before in my main meals. I drink a lot of water and I make sure to exercise. Hotel gyms are ok, but there are so many things to to when traveling - my friends just got back from a honeymoon in Hawaii they went hiking, swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, surfing, zip lining - it shouldn't be hard to stay active.

    Have a great time!
  • I'd go for early morning jogs/runs, do abs by the beach, ... learn some activities: surfing, scuba diving? tour around in a rental bicycle?

I'd try to log in what I eat, that's what I'll be doing in my 2 month-long vacation with lots of traveling. I'll pack my short shorts, running shoes and t-shirts AND the mp3 player. I won't have an excuse not to work out or keep moving. ^_^

    Enjoy your vacation lots!
  • Well I would still "watch" what I ate and log. You will probably be very active while you are there. Swimming.. walking. So if you wanted to log that as well you could. I dont think I would actually work out though. Just have fun!! As long as you eat in moderation you should be fine. You may find that you lose weight while you are there. Have fun!!! :)
