Wanting to purchase a treadmill

Morning all - I really, really enjoy walking/light jogging on the treadmill at the YMCA. I realize their treadmills are $6000.00 machines, and I certainly cannot afford that - but I'd like to get one for home for in the mornings (I can't get to the Y in the am's - single mom with no other support). I have dance videos, etc., and they are fun, but the thing with the treadmill is I can walk and read my kindle - I could easily do it for an hour if I had the time - which is in the morning.

SO - I'd like to ask for suggestions as to any great treadmills out there - I need to stay under $1000.00.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks all! And Happy Friday! :)

You should go to Sears or somewhere that sells them and just check/test them out.

Check Craigslist, lots of people buy them, never use them much and then sell them for nothing to get rid of them...

Also if you have a used sporting good store in your area.

This is the treadmill I bought this past January. I absolutely LOVE all the options it has as far as preset workouts!
Good luck finding one you'll love!!

sears, walmart, Kmart, ****'s Sporting Goods, or any other sporting goods store.

Edit: Ok, they starred out the name... It starts with a D and ends in Ick's.
  • I just bought a great treadmill for $320 from Kmart/Sears. Its very sturdy and even has the walking sticks built in. Its the Proform crosswalk sport treadmill and im in love with it.

A little over a year ago my husband and I bought the Nordic Track A.C.T. Commercial Elliptical. I think we got it for $999, and I believe the shipping was free. We bought the elliptical instead of a treadmill, because I have knee problems, but my husband loves it just as much as I do now.

I prefer this model because it is very sturdy, and it doesn't wobble while you are on it. It has plenty of pre- programmed workouts plus it has a port for scan discs so that you can buy new workouts for it. I have a good one from Jillian. It has an iPod /iPhone port with speakers so you don't have to wear headphones and, of course, a large water bottle holder. It also has a fan, but I'm 5'5 and the thing might as well be pointed at the ceiling. I think you have to be 5'7 or taller to benefit from it.

Craig's list is fantastic for treadmills! But, make sure to see them and try them out before purchasing. Sears and ****'s Sporting goods are two other great places to try out treadmills. Here is my opinion on treadmills, you get what you spend. I think I spent $1,500 on mine - but LOVE it. And, I had something go wrong with it, and even though it was a part not covered by warranty - they sent it to me free (some computer board piece). So, mine is a Horizon CST something or another. Why I like it vs. treadmills my parents/friends have had:

    1. STURDY. It's very sturdily built - maybe not gym quality - but no weird shakes when you walk on it.
    2. Wide walking surface -- you don' think about this - but if you tend to veer when you walk (even a little) it's important
    3. It folds up. I use my treadmill in front of my basement TV - but it folds up and has wheels for easy transport when I have company over
    4. It moves up in speed by .1 MPH and in incline by .2. I know this sounds small - but a lot of machines will only move up in .5 mph and by full 1% in incline. I like control :)
    5. It has a 12 year motor warranty. I figure if I'm going to spend that much - I want it to last!
    6. Quality - I use mine multiple times a day. Sure it has gotten months rest at a time especially in the summer (but also when I'm being lazy some winters), but has lasted me 5 years now with just that one breakdown which was an easy and free fix. Can't tell any difference in it compared to the day I got it (my mom's is stuck on a 9 incline and they can't even figure out how to get it out of the room it's in!).
  • +1 for all suggestions to check Craigslist and test some out at the stores. Craigslist can have like new for cheap, and the stores will let you see if you like the controls, the length of the track, etc.

Another alternative you might consider is nordictrack.com. I purchased mine though there on closeout a few years ago and am really happy with it. I got a $2500 one for $999 on clearance, free shipping and 6mo same as cash back in 2008.

In general, the bigger the track and more HP the motor has, the longer it will last. Something you might want to keep in mind as you do your research.

We have a great treadmill and i think the key is that its heavier duty.- check the weight it is that it will hold up to. Ours hold a higher weight and is a solid looking machine. Don't get anything that looks fragile - it won't last. We got ours at sears, they do have good sales, particularly when they are getting updated stock. Kjiji and classified ads are a good to watch too if you can look up epinions on the machine they are selling.
