Hello, I just started with my fitness pal and was blown away by how much sugar is in milk.

My 1 cup of milk has 12g of sugar, and my daily total allotment for sugar is 35g?

Is all milk so high in sugar.?

thanks

John

    Welcome, John! :flowerforyou:

Pretty much anything that ends in an -ose is a sugar: glucose, fructose, sucrose, and - you guessed it - LACTOSE! So yeah, it is technically a sugar.

I would guess that milk for people who are lactose-intolerant is lower in sugar (though I don't drink milk, so I haven't checked). Unless you have issues with your blood sugar, I wouldn't worry about sugar from things like fruit and milk too much - just stay away from the processed stuff.

That what Lactose is - milk sugar. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I wouldn't worry too much about going over some on the sugars if they are fruits/milk/generally healthy stuff. It's the refined sugars you probably need to keep to a minimum. Oh, and welcome John!! Very cute baby in your pic!

I LOVE milk too. It has been really hard for me to give it up. I limit myself to one cup of fat free milk a day, but some days I crave it and drink more. I have always been a milk drinker.

I don't worry about the daily allotment of sugar. I only worry about table sugar, HFCS, and the like.

I agree with what everyone else has said....maybe try 1% or homo. milk.
In my Women's health Training Guide (2008) A trainer said 1 cup of chocolate milk is the best thing to have after a work out...so it cant be that bad for ya!!!
I think its the refined sugar you need to worry about!!!

yep i agree, i make my protien shake in the morning.

    skim milk
    whey protien
    1 med. banana

and i'm already over my sugar!!! i dont worry about that type of sugar though. fruits and dairy are good for you. just watch the added sugars, and refined sugars!!

    Good Luck!

Thanks for all the responses, I guess I will try skim milk instead of my 1%.

milk sugar is one of the good ones, so don't worry too much. That being said, it IS a sugar, and will eventually be transformed into fat in the body if you take too much in. Milk is healthy, and good for you, but don't go crazy with it, like any other carb, too much milk can trigger fat storage.
