Does it matter if you do strength training and running the same days? I am training for a half marathon, so my "short" runs right now are 4 miles. I am also finishing up ChaLean Extreme. I had planned on doing a strength workout today (chest and legs) AND my 6 mile run. A friend advised me not to since that would be too much on my knees. Thoughts? I thought about just doing my "long" run and the chest exercises.

I'm an avid distance runner and try to keep strength training in my routine. I wouldn't recommend doing legs on the same day as your run. I've done body pump after my 8 and 9 miles runs but that is cardo lifting and not heavy weights. Even lifting heavy the day prior to your long run can cause you to be more fatigued. Good luck with your 1/2!

I try to alternate days and do upper body strength training and running on one day, and lower body strength the next. When I have done this in the past, as time got closer to the actual race day, I eased up on the lower body stuff. The last time I trained for a half marathon, I kept to that schedule and it worked out fine. I also used the Run-Walk-Run method and found it gave me complete energy at the end of the race. Here are some interesting thoughts related to training and running from Jeff Galloway: http://healthsourcemag.com/blog/featured-blog/10-questions-with-jeff-galloway/

    Above all, have fun!

Crap. Now I need to figure out how my schedule is going to work so I can still take one day off per week from any exercise.

I currently teach a spin class twice a week and I do squats and possibly deadlifts after words. The heaviest squats I have done is a set of 5 of 315, but I've switched programs, so I am now at a much lower weight and perfecting my form. I would alternate days, but I don't have time on my off days.
