My doc said to try this

I know I can lose the weight, I've done it once before, and back then, I wasn't even trying to or thinking about losing weight. Then when I lost the one thing motivating me to get moving, I slowly gained it back and then some. I tried starting back up again, but two things, 1) Only riding bike for a certain distance most of the week did anything at all. (I've tried walking, jogging, running, etc. none of them made me lose any weight.) and 2) When I tried riding my bike again, I can't remember a time I wasn't nearly hit by someone's car, even when riding on the sidewalk, crossing the street when I have the signal saying it is ok to cross, in bright daylight. Even when I WAS hit by a truck going over 45 mph the opposite direction of me (thankfully it just clipped me instead of a head on collision) I still tried for a while. After a few more close calls, I weighed the options... over weight, or risk getting worse than what I've already been in.
With ALL that in mind, I'm more than open to suggestions.

What about spinning classes or maybe getting into biking on trails. You would just have to worry about terrain, not people in cars hitting you. Other work-out suggestions (i'm guessing you are an outdoorsy type since you enjoy biking outside) maybe go hiking, kayaking for an upper body work out, just think of things that you have fun doing and you are way more likely to stick with it.

I tried joining a gym last year, my health insurance covered and fully paid for a 1 year membership, and even got 1 free session with a trainer. I tried just the spinning for a short while before I decided to give the trainer a shot incase he had anything to add that might help me out more. When I spoke with them, I put 100% of my trust in him, and that was a HUGE mistake... later that night, I must've taken a dozen pills to try to stop my shoulders and arms from hurting from the weight lifting he had me do earlier that day. (my body doesn't react to generic medicines very much. "take 1-2" is more like "take 4 or not get any results") I was unable to dull the pain at all, or get much sleep at all. I had to wait and make a doctor appointment the next day to get something strong enough to manage. Even when they gave me a shot in the office to help in the meantime, it barely did anything to the pain. That was easily one of the worst pains in my life, and I've had a fractured bone in my arm and had to have stitches in my hand.
But the bike trails is a nice idea, if I can actually find any good ones nearby, or get someone to drag me out to one. (verbally)
  • If you have room in your home or garage, how about a stationary bike? You seem to like biking. You could listen to music or read or watch TV, and not have to worry about trucks or other vehicles hitting you. And you can buy one that tells you the exact distance you've biked, making it easy to calculate your calories. In any case, best of luck with Myfitnesspal!--Jim
