I Wish I Had A Bomb Calorimeter

Libby's canned pumpkin claims 40 cal/half cup. Pumpkin is the only ingredient. Island Sun canned pumpkin is 50 cal/half cup. Also - only pumpkin. http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-pumpkin-i11423 claims about 25 cal/half cup.

As a math/science nerd type, this drives me bonkers. You guys can go on about wanting food scales and HRMs, but I'm asking my fairy godmother for a bomb calorimeter. X-D

Drives me nuts too. Shh, don't tell anyone, but I'd just go with the 40 cal one. :)

That's so weird! Could it be that the Libby's is whipped with more air?

No clue, but I have cans of both in my pantry - it's not an entry error the labels actually say one is 40 and the other is 50. No clue where that website gets its info.

It's maddening, yes, but it's also only 10 calories. You burn that by opening the can! Don't sweat it. And, it's an amazing vegetable (mmmm, pumpkin soup with walnuts...)
  • I think different companies use different formulas to derive the caloric values. Also, preparation can make a difference, perhaps one has retained more water than another, or one has used more water in processing. I use the information at the U.S.D.A. if I'm unsure or don't believe the label information. The link is: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

I'm a chem major, so I'm totally with ya on this one. :-)
