Refrigerating Mayonnaise.

As long as I have been alive, I have always remembered putting the mayo in the fridge. I figured it would last longer and plus, I enjoy it cold better. Until a year and a half ago, I never knew anyone who stuck their mayonnaise in a cabinet. My question is, SHOULD it be refrigerated? I made a post a few days ago about going on a trip and well, I want to bring some mayo for my canned tuna. Would a small jar be safe to leave in an air conditioned room?

Mayo in a jar must be refrigerated after opening.
Get some of those packets from any fast food place and bring them along on your trip.
They don't require refrigeration and its less bulky to carry with you.0 -
Mayo doesn't have to be refrigerated but I have to have mine cold so I always refrigerate it.0

The only mayo packets I've seen are not the reduced fat/ low-fat ones. I was hoping to find some that are. :-/0 -
I think mayo is better cold0

Mayo is the perfect breeding grounds for all kinds of bacteria. Always store it in the fridge unless you like having food poisoning.0

I agree with this... I have actually googled this a while ago and found that yes, it should be kept in the fridge.0 -

I have some Starkist lunch kits that contain tuna, a few crackers, a packet of low fat mayo and some pickle relish. If you can't find the mayo packets, maybe get the kit instead.0 -
Mayonnaise is oil and eggs - if not kept in a controlled temperature you are asking for trouble. That's always one of those things I kept cold.
As for the portion pkgs - use half if you're worried about calories/fat. The LF ones have additives and stuff in there that take away from the nutritional values for the sake of being LF.
If you're really concerned, you can by the smallest jar of what ever your favorite is and keep it in the ice bucket.0 -

I was actually reading an article about that. It's not as bad as it seems.

Mayo MUST be refrigerated after opening!!! An air conditioned room is not sufficient. Take a small ice chest with you.0

I had a friend who became very ill and it was traced to improperly stored mayo. I personally won't be taking any chances!0 -

I don't blame you. I'm very hesitant about it, but wanted to ask anyway.0 -

That's a good idea. I didn't think about that. Thanks!0 -
A friend of mine keeps a small jar of mayo in his glovebox in the car at all times (for emergencies lol)...I could never bring myself to eat it but he has never gotten sick : D0
