So my short term goal was to lose 14lbs in 6 weeks
Turns out i've lost 13lbs in just under 3 weeks but I am new to dieting so it's probably water
I was aiming for my first 14lbs to be off by 25th May 2011.
Should I now change my goal so I am looking at 14lbs off within 6 weeks of now? Or leave it so it's within 9 weeks of now?

My main reason for giving up diets before is failing to reach a goal and giving up - don't want to push to lose 14lbs every 4 weeks and then fail and get that giving up feeling back

advice?

I would leave it at 9 weeks. After the beginning, you lose 1 to 2 lbs on average per week. You rocked your first goal! Great Job!
  • I say leave the goal where it is now. For a couple of reasons 1) Your body will slow down the weight loss and 2) being this close to it already nearly ensures your success of reaching your goal!

    Good luck!

I would leave your goal where it is .. always nice to make goal ... I set mine for 10 lbs a month but as I am getting down it is getting much harder .... it is a real job ...

Once you've absolutely met your first goal, then set/adjust your next mini-goal (realizing, of course your weight loss will slow down). **edited to add... I wouldn't put a date with your goal. You can't control how fast or slow you're going to lose, so it may end in frustration. Personally, I'd just set a weight (and not a date).

    Congrats!

I'd keep it where it is. At least then you've got the motivation of having reached your first goal =) Moving it and failing to reach it and then giving up after you've already lost so much wouldn't be good at all. 14lbs every 4 weeks is a big weight loss as it is, I'm lucky if I lose half that every 4 weeks no matter how good I am. There are weeks I'll lose 3lbs and weeks where I lose half a pound or stay the same no matter how good I am.

I don't set myself goals to lose so much in a set amount of time any more because so many things can affect it and if I fail I know I'll just give up and have a blow out and probably not get back on track for weeks in which time I'll have gained it all back.
  • how about, instead of picking a number of pounds to lose in a set number of weeks, you make a short-term goal similar to:

being at/under your calorie goal for a solid week (2-weeks, 3-weeks, etc)
staying under your sodium goal for a week, etc
adjusting your eating patterns to hit your personal carb/protein/fat ratios (whatever you chose to set them at)
getting 8+ cups of water a day for a week, etc
walking/etc a certain number of days this week
walking/etc a certain distance in a given time frame
    walking/etc a certain distance faster
participating in a 5k or new "event" or activity
losing x inches in a month
reading a health article a day for a month

need super short-term goals to build up lots of eary successses?

Do one wise meal at a time. One healthy snack at a time. One junk food avoidance at a time. One "park too far and walk" choice at a time. One good day at a time and let it snowball....

    One "I-WILL-NOT-BEAT-MYSELF-UP-FOR-A-MISTAKE" at a time :)

    you can do this

I just met my first 'mini goal' early today! *yay!* and now that i've met it, i changed my next goals just slightly, noting that it's slower to lose weight as you go. So i'd keep it until you've met it, mark how you met it early, and then make changes if necessary.

I lost 15.8lbs in 4 weeks, which is way faster then i expected! It's it fun when you can surprise yourself like that ;)

You are doing great! Keep it up!
