Plain and simple...are Bananas bad for you? Every time I pick up a banana for a snack someone seems to be yelling at me "that is going right to belly fat" true or false....

Yes and no. do you go over your sugar for the day? then if so yes.
If you are looking to get super slim any added sugar can be bad but in most peoples situations it's just fine.0 -
Not if you can fit them into your carb goal for the day, and especially not if you eat them right before or after exercise! They have a higher sugar and therefore calorie content than a lot of other fruits, but they also have potassium and fiber.
If you're really concerned about the sugar and calories in bananas, kiwi fruit also has potassium but has about half the calories.0 -
I eat those just before training.0

I have a banana every day......never seemed to affect me at all..............and they really curb my appetite.....0

what?!?!? how does that even make sense?0 -
NO!!! They are a fruit and damn good for you. Keep an eye on your sugar and carb intake (as you should no matter what you are eating) and factor them in as a perfect snack0

Is this a joke question?
Do people SERIOUSLY think bananas are bad for you?
wait...is this because of that stupid ad along the side of the screen sometimes that shows the browning banana...?0 -
NO! Bananas are great! I like the person who said they eat one before workouts. It's a great pre-workout snack (especially with a little peanut butter...).
And, there is NO food that goes "straight to the belly". If you're eating as many calories as you burn (bmr + daily activity + exercise), you won't store extra energy.0 -

Too much sugar can hinder weight loss, and also if you are trying to cut out the last little bit and hit a really low bf%, thats how.0 -

What does that have to do with bananas being good or bad? While fruits do have sugar and this sugar can be counted in a generic setting (e.g. nutrition labels and MFP logs), just like fats, all sugars are not created equal, nor will they all have the same effect on the body.
No one has ever gotten fat eating fruit.0 -
People always say eat less bananas, especially if you are trying to lose weight, but I've lost over 65 lbs, and bananas are my favourite fruit. I eat almost one a day. They are great when you need to grab something and run. EAT THEM, and be happy! :bigsmile:0

Hence why I said yes AND no.....read above please.0 -
there not bad for you
eat them after a good workout though...0 -
They're not "bad" for you - they're just not the best choice most of the time.
Bananas have a high glycemic index after they ripen, which means that unless you're eating green bananas, they affect your blood sugar levels similar to when you eat white bread or sugar.
While most fruits like apples contain fructose and glucose, ripe bananas contain an extra kind of sugar: sucrose, which is basically akin to table sugar. That third type of sugar is why they affect blood sugar the way they do, and why a lot of people say don't eat them.
If you have one occasionally, it probably won't throw off your diet. Bananas have a lot of nutrients and benefits. But if you're trying to lose weight, I wouldn't make that your fruit of choice.0 -
I agree with aeckeles. Bananas have a high glycemic index, so they are broken down into glucose really quickly, which causes a spike in insulin much more quickly than fruits with low glycemic indexes. The spike in insulin is associated with fat storage. Normally, the banana might not be the ideal fruit of choice throughout the day, unless you accompany it with a healthy fat or protein which will slow down the digestive process and keep insulin levels more stable. However, a banana is great before or after a workout, since you want to consume a source of quick fuel in those situations. Particularly afterwards because of its great potassium levels, which help with electrolyte balance.0

Most monkeys are in pretty good shape.0

I know that banana's are a good source of potassium. I used to work in a large general hospital and I observed that a banana was always a quick and ready foood choice for every Doctor on the go.....so thats good enough for me!0
-
I often mix a banana in with my protein shake after I work out b/c you need those carbs to help the protein get into your muscles!
My answer to your question would be anything eaten in moderation is not bad for you....0 -
banana peels can be dangerous

Hahahahahahahahaha! I saw that happen to someone once, and he was carrying two big satchels. It was one of the best things that has ever happened. To anyone.0 -

Exactly. How often do we see ANY animal in the wild with a weight problem and a calculator? I wonder if there is something to that????0 -
bananas are high in calories but also potassium and other things we need. I find mostly I will eat banana's when Im on my period.. and its actually a reccomend that you do so. I rarely count banana's in my calories when i eat them tho i know that i should but... i'm not going to choose when its something that i really need it does help cramps and it does fill you up... but it really is a yes and no answer. of course they are GOOD for you they are fruits! but if you're trying to go lower in calories and such then no. also you shouldn't eat more than one a day bc that's too much potassium.0
-
I sure hope not. I have always heard that bananas help with your memory, so i eat one before a big test. Nerdy but hey, Ellie does all she can to pass with flying colors even if those colors are boosted with a little yellow freckled fruit:)0
