Garden Squash

OK, so I planted squash in my veggie gardent this year and so far....all the plants have died! They are in a sunny location and we have black clay soil that we've been mixing sand into to make it more pliable. They are watered regularly...what am I doing wrong? Last year I got them grow, got squash for about 2 weeks then they mysteriously died.
