Ok...I'll be....gentle...seeing as how you're a fer'ner and all....
All american's are known as 'Yanks'. That is acceptable parlance.
Yankees, on the other hand are another name for those of a northern american persuasion that decided in their own pride that the southern states were not capable of governing themselves after we declared independence from their corrupt and heavily northern biased government. The 'Yankees' as they were called, then invaded the Confederate States of America, which was a soveriegn and internationally recognized legal independent entity (by the British, the French, as well as the American Government) which resulted in 4 years of civil war, and almost 500,000 deaths (364, 000 Yankee dead, and 133, 821 confederate dead). The real rub came after the Southern surrender, when 'Yankee' carpetbaggers came into the south, and raped, burned, and looted with government sanctioned impunity in the name of 'southern reclamation'. Oh, and no matter what you have been told, the war was never fought over slavery, it was actually discussed several times by the southern governments about abolishing slavery (which was actually almost as widespread in the northern industrial basins) before the north did. The northern Government slyly passed the emancipation in order to keep the British from entering the war on the side of the South. It was a brilliant move, but it was never one that was made in the spirit of freeing oppressed americans. In fact, there was very widespread 'drafting' by the north of all free blacks into the Union military.
Ok...I'm gonna stop here as this is going to be controversial enough as it is. Suffice to say, I am proud to be a 'Yank' but I am not a yankee, nor will I ever be a yankee. Am I a redneck? Not in the least. Am I proud of my southern Heritage, heck yes I am. Far too many southerners died due to Northern pride and arrogance for me not to honor their memory.0 -

:noway: glad you're proud of your southern heritage bro...but I too am proud of being an american...yankee, um okay I guess...never think of it as such...and ah...I have a different take on what you just wrote of...which is cool because this of freedom of speech and all...so I'll hold my tounge....tightly...tightly...
I am totally not surprised that you have a different take. Funny how the winners get to write history at the expense of truth.
(Ok, I need to stop being like this...I'm actually really really surprised at how strongly this has all poured out of me...I'm not a southern flag kinda guy, nor am I a south is gonna rise again type either. Actually, those people really generally make me really mad...being a student of history though, I have done a lot of research into this, and it makes me so sad to see how things came about, and then how time has twisted the facts in the interest of good guys versus bad guys...anyway, I'm done. Now I get to throw ya off for a bit... I was raised Southern, and still carry it in my but have lived all over the States, and now happily reside in Northern Michigan, and couldn't be happier! So yeah, I do know all about the North vs South cultural bias that *still* exists in our woonderful country. But guess what? It goes BORTH ways! When I was a kid in 3rd or 4th grade, and moved from Georgia, to Nebraska... let's just say that I had to learn a whole lot of history differently then before!
So, I guess I'm the opposite of magichatter06; I'm a Northern Biscuit and Gravy?! :smokin:0 -
