P90X vs. Gym workout?

I have been consistently going to the gym doing strength training and cardio since Feb. 1 2011. I have seen good results, but now my wife will be going out of town to attend to her ill mother. This means no more gym for me, at least for the foreseeable future as I have two small children to take care of while she is gone. I am considering doing P90X in the meantime. I don’t want to lose ground on what progress I have made. Do you think I would be able to get results equal to what I would get from my workouts at the gym, doing P90X at home?

YES!! I have gotten way better results following P90X than when I went to the gym. The workouts are so well structured and the splits are sensible. Of course, my glutes are sore two days after each of my Legs and Back workout. Ouch! I am a stay-at-home-mom and I do the workouts while my boy naps. Sometimes he wakes when I'm finishing up the Abs portion, but he likes to "help" mommy.

Good luck and I hope your wife's mom gets better soon.

If you cannot make it to the gym- what other alternative do you have? This is one of the best, structured programs out there. If you can get a hold of some dumbells and a pull up bar- you are set. Some days you may say- this is easy. Yeah- just wait. Especially when you get to the "corn cob pull ups" and the Ab ripper X. and the "Chaturangas" all new language and fun routines.
  • I started the P90X last summer. It was working great until I suffered an unrelated injury. There will be times when you want to personally find Tony Horton and punch him out.... but the workouts are awesome. The yoga is a bit advanced, I struggled with it for awhile as I have never done yoga before, and the Ken-Po is better if you have something to hit, like a heavy bag. I've never understood just punching air.

The reason why P90X can be great is because it outlines everything for you. You don't have to bother guessing what you want to do. For about 90% of people out there, it's a great program.

Also, it seems most of the people I have talked to or asked how they liked the program like 75% never finished. Other than reading the forums on this site, I know 2 people who have completed it, one of them did it twice. Any tips or tricks to finishing the program?

It's a 3 month commitment of time. If you go into it knowing that you have to at least put in 3 months that helps. I have an app on my ipod that helps me log in on the app so i don't have to go run and find my paperwork each time. I can also listen to music on my ipod while I workout so I don't have to hear Tony over and over (sorry but that began to annoy me) That helped. Of course knowing that I had to adjust the workouts for my initial weaknesses also helped. And when I had to- I took days of rest even more than he scheduled them. After going through it once, I started to exchange other similar workouts because I just get bored too easily. That's my take on the program. It's worth trying.

If you like variety and a challenge its great! I'm on my 6th week and not bored of the routines OR Tony Horton!!

I think its better than the gym as you got people working along with you, but not actually in the room. That motivates you to be as good as they are! In the gym I just get bored and stop challenging myself if I dont feel like it. Watching the class, who are super fit, always feels like a challenge. Yes, and the classes are structured in such a way that you dont have to think about it, just press 'play'!

    good luck :flowerforyou:

This is why I like it. And I love the variety of moves. He has different people doing different difficulties on moves. And you can also use resistance bands for pull downs instead of pull ups if you need to.

I don't follow the entire thing. That's your choice. I'm not impressed with his cardio DVD at all. Jillian does more for me in that area (so does my treadmill).

I have been an avid weigh tlifter for years. I thought I would break it up a little and do a full round of P90X a few months ago. I will say that if you use weights that are challenging, you will ge great results. Good luck!

Fitness Tracker 90 CE. I looked it up on my ipod touch. I apparently have an old free version called FT 90.
