Meds/depression and weight loss!

I've put on about 40 pounds due to bipolar depression and the meds to treat it. I'm finally on some weight neutral medications and finally feel good and have the energy to start exercising. I've been on this site about a week and a half and I love it. It's working for me. I've been trying to lose weight on my own since the New Year with no results. Now I've lost 4 lbs so I'm finally off to a good start. I hope to make some supportive friends here

Welcome  and well done for such a great start to your new life!
I've been on here for quite a while and everyone is so extremely supportive, so you have no worries there. I'm sure you'll benefit just as much as the rest of us and can't wait to hear about your progress.
So welcome and enjoy. :flowerforyou:0 -
I understand where you are coming from. I have bipolar 2 and ADD. About 3 years ago I started to lose some weight, before the bipolar diagnosis. Then once I got the diagnosis and started taking Depakote and some other medications, I gained back the 35 lbs. I had lost plus a lot more. :frown: In October 2009, I was weighed at the doctors office and I weighed 272 lbs, the most I have ever weighed. I decided I had to do something about it. That is when I told my psychiatrist that I wasn't taking Depakote or the other meds that cause carb and sugar cravings resulting in weight gain anymore. She was not supportive, but I told her that I would just stop if she didn't give me something else that wouldn't cause weight gain. She finally came around and I was able to start losing weight.
I didn't count calories at first or keep a food diary, I just tried to eat healthier foods and smaller portions. I lost about 65 lbs. that way, then I finally realized that I needed to exercise too and lost some more weight before I finally found this site and started using it. I have met some great people here and the site is easy to use and it helps me stay on track. I've lost 90 lbs and now my psychiatrist is one of my biggest supporters. I think that at first she thought that I was just using the medications as an excuse for my weight gain. But unless you've been there, you don't know how bad the side effects can be.
I wish you the very best and I'm sure that you will do really well. :flowerforyou: You can request me as a friend if you would like to, I would be happy to cheer you on. Welcome to myfitnesspal!
Best Wishes,
