Why am I gaining weight

I have religiously stuck to a healthy diet and exercise routine. I have lost almost 50 lbs since November. Recently I quit smoking, and really have to keep an eye on the urge to munch but I am keeping my caloric intake at about 1200 a day as well as 2 hours of Cardio per day. (hiking or jogging) So why did I gain 5 lbs in the past week? And when I decide to maintain my weight, am I really going to be able to do this?
I read it could be fluid retention, If so this is the 1st it has occured since I started this new healthy lifestyle. No Monthly monsters come my way anymore..
Any ideas?

    It could be that you are gaining muscle too. Muscle does weigh more than fat. Just dont get discouraged and keep it up, you are doing great. :)

    Could be water weight. Do you drink a lot of water? If not, your body will retain it. Also, are you weight training? Muscle weighs more than fat, so possibly you are gaining muscle.
  • It could be water or muscle. A big congratulations on quitting smoking though -- and thats a fabulous weight loss since November. Keep up the excellent work!!

    If you are doing 2 hours of cardio you need much more than 1200 calories, you should be eating the calories you burn during exercise.

    muscle weighs more than fat, and I noticed that i gained when I quit smoking believe it or not smoking increases metabolism so when you quit you gain a little
  • A) are you weight training? if yes, than maybe you're gaining mucle
    b) 2 hours of cardio is alot for someone who is only eating 1200 calories. Your body is prob in starvation mode. i would increase the calorie intake and see what happens.

    It's water retention. No one can gain 5 pounds of muscle or fat in a week. And if you're eating at a calorie deficit you won't be building new muscle tissue anyway. Your food diary isn't open so I can't see what kinds of foods you eat, but make sure that you're eating your exercise calories, that you're getting at least 8 glasses of water every day and make sure you're tracking your sodium.

    sodium intake is a big possibility. Also, make sure you're tracking EVERYthing that goes into your mouth. When I quit smoking it was hard to get a handle on... keep up the good work!
  • I know when I quit smoking I gained weight a lot (also had cortisone injections) I didnt eat more but I got a lot more stressed and Im now finding it impossible to shift this weight (when I lose weight one week, it will come back the next) its so frustrating, but maybe try pills for water retention, like adios or dandelion tea? Thats my plan of action. Hope you find a solution.

    sorry but you don't gain muscle doing that much cardio on a calorie restricted diet. you need to lift, and lift heavy and have little or no caloric deficit.
  • Keep it up- make sure that you drink your 64 oz of water a day.... and pay attention to the amount of sodium you are eating. Everyone has a off week or few days.... You are doing great!

    I'm no expert or anything, but I know that you gain weight when you gain muscle since muscle weighs more than fat, especially if you're hiking. Or maybe you should just change up your routine, give your body something new to respond to. But also making a big change like quitting smoking (which is awesome that you did) throws your body into kind of a shock and it doesn't know what's going on so it could just be adjusting. Hope that's food for thought.

    I quit smoking too..recently. I haven't gained weight but its been hard for me to lose...I've heard it slows your metabolism. Nicotine is a stimulant...so i can see how this would happen.

    Sorry, but you aren't going to gain 5 pounds of muscle in a week: especially in a caloric deficit. Over time, maybe, but not in a week. I would agree that there may be a link to the fact that you have quit smoking.

    Did you change anything in your diet? Drinking habits (i.e. more or less water)? Look @your sodium and sugar levels. Sodium can/will cause water retention and sugar can actually have a similar effect as well. Bump up your calories a bit and change up your exercise to see if that helps.

    When i was working out doing that much cardio I found I wasent losing much weight. I stopped doing cardio every day and cut it back to every other day and worked in alot of strength training...muscle may weigh more, but its leaner and burns more fat. I started to lose more weight that way.

    Congrats on 50lb weight loss. You certainly asked a question that I was going to post myself. I have lost a total of 7 pounds, however, in the past week, I have gained 2lbs. I am wondering why, when I exercise 4 days a week. I am far from my weight loss goal, and this bump in the road, so early has me concerned. I do have my diary open, so any suggestions, would be helpful. It gets very discouraging, but I am looking for any suggestions as well.

    try drinking 2 liters of water a day. if you are retaining fluid, then that should help flush some of it out. your body will hold onto less water if you keep hydrated.

    You are not gaining muscle doing that much cardio. You will not gain muscle with only cardio. All you are doing is burning off your lean muscle mass with all that cardio combined with a severe calorie restriction. There's no need for 2 hours a day. This will cause your metabolism to slow and your weight loss to stall. The body treats calorie restriction and intense cardio as stress to the body and will try and protects itself from that stress. Incorporate some strength training and eat back your calories burned during exercise. This will help preserve that lean muscle mass!

    Every change you throw at your body triggers a response. The problem with many diet and exercise programs is that they can accidentally encourage your body to defend fat, shed muscle, increase appetite and even lower its metabolism.     Maybe you've tried before to get in shape. But for some reason, you didn't get the results you wanted. If you're like I used to be, you've repeated that cycle year after year to no avail. Maybe you've failed so many times that you think of yourself as a “special case.” You've started to believe your entire metabolism consists of a little turtle on a treadmill. You wonder whether you've got the fat gene. You're convinced that no matter how hard you diet, your cells can still be seen eating Twinkies when viewed under a microscope.

    Look. You're not a special case. Even if you had the fat gene (common among Pima Indians but rare otherwise), you'd only be burning 50-60 calories a day less than anybody else. Even if you've been diagnosed with a metabolic difficulty such as diabetes or hypothyroidism, you can still be successful with proper medical support. Most probably, other approaches failed you either because they were missing important pieces, focused on the wrong things, or produced results so slowly that you just gave up. What you need most is good information. You're in the right place.
    The law of unintended consequences
    Your body is an amazing feedback system aimed at balance and survival. Humans are at the top of the food chain because they are able to adapt to their environment. Every action produces a reaction. Every change in its environment triggers a survival response. It's important to keep that in mind when you plan your fitness program. If you treat your body as an enemy to be conquered, you'll produce unintended results.

    For example, if you severely cut off the supply of food to your body, it will defend itself by slowing down its metabolism to survive starvation. The body will shed muscle mass the same way that you would throw cargo from a plane that was low on fuel, and it will reduce its thyroid activity to conserve energy. The body will also actually defend its fat stores. In anorexia, muscle loss can be so profound that fat as a percentage of body weight actually rises. Extreme carbohydrate restriction also causes muscle loss, dehydration, and slower metabolism, which is why even successful Atkins dieters can have a significant rebound in weight after they stop the diet (don't worry – the advice on this site will prevent that from happening).

    As another example, if you put your body under stress through overexertion and lack of sleep, it will respond by slowing down, reducing muscle growth, and increasing your appetite for junk food, carbohydrates and fat. If you feed your body excessive amounts of sugar and quickly digested carbohydrates, and it will shut off its ability to burn fat until those sugars are taken out of the bloodstream.

    This website will show you how to work with your body to quickly produce the changes you want. In order to do that, you need to take actions that push your body to adapt – to build strength, burn fat, and increase fitness. You need a training program, not an exercise routine. You need a nutrition plan, not a diet. You need a challenge, not a few good habits you usually try to follow except when you don't.

    Setting the right goal
    John Dewey once said that a problem well-stated is half-solved. If you want to reach your goal, you have to define it correctly. See, a lot of people say “I want to lose weight.” Well, if losing weight is your goal, go on a no-carb diet. You'll lose a lot of weight – some of it will be fat, a lot of it will be water, and a dangerous amount will be muscle tissue. You'll lose weight quickly, but you'll slow your metabolism and gain fat more quickly once you go off the diet. Trust me on this. I've been there, done that.

    The problem is that you've set the wrong goal. If you want to look better, have more energy and enjoy better health, the goal is not simply to “lose weight.” The goal is to improve your fitness level and body composition. That means losing fat, improving your aerobic capacity, training your strength and defending your muscle tissue. You can't do that with a no-carb diet. You will do it using the approach you'll learn on this website. Trust me on this one too. I know what it's like to feel fat, tired and helplessly out of shape. The whole point of this site is to help others avoid that, by sharing lessons that I had to learn the hard way.
    Ready to change?

    Right this minute, your body is the way it is because it has adapted to the lifestyle you've thrown at it, in an attempt to survive. Ever seen the directory at the mall with the little red arrow that says “you are here”? Well, fitness is the same way. You are here. You can't start anywhere else. So be kind to yourself. Don't beat yourself up. Don't worry about how much there is to do. Change your self-talk from “My body is my enemy” to “My body is my partner.” Accept where you are right now as the starting point, and start moving.

    Changing your body requires more than just “going on a diet” for a few weeks. If you want to change your body, you have to make some changes to your lifestyle (which requires some discipline, but isn't as hard as it sounds). If you create the right environment, your body will adapt to it by becoming leaner, stronger, and more energetic. You can do this.


    It could be you need to recalculate your weight loss goals since you have dropped so much (the exercise calories issue might not necessarily apply to you)

    WOW! Thanks Everyone, and yes I am very happy with the progress I have made. Since I stopped smoking 3 weeks ago, I can really tell I want to do "somthing" in place of that ciggarette. Sometimes I just do curls when I want to smoke. I have purchased the celery, carrots, and fruits. I have increased my fruit intake quit a bit in the past 3 weeks. I am not good with drinking plenty of water. I do when I hike but otherwise it is Crystal Light. Not sure how to open my Food diary for you to see. But I would be intrested in the feed back.

    So you did change your diet...cut back on your fruit intake (2-3 pieces only) and see what happens. And definitely get in @ least 8 glasses of water.

    Looking Back, I have been quite high on my sodium. and too many meaningless snacks, although I still remain under my calorie goal. As I have lost weight, by ability to burn calories has become harder. 2 hours of hiking which used to burn 1000 calories now only burns 500-600 depending. I am having to work harder to get my heart rate up. My resting heart rate averages between 50-65 and has been as low as 44BPM. When I hike, (and this is a climbing hike 1 mile up and 1 mile down) It usually gets up to 145-152BPM
