Does anyone have a body fat % monitor? The trainers at my gym use them so I ordered one from Amazon and I'm just wondering how accurate they are.

I've been wondering this, too... I looked at several on Amazon and all seem to have mixed reviews.

Mine may not be accurate in terms of an exact percentage, but it seems to be able to track changes in body fat pretty well. I have noticed more muscle toning through exercise (and I was starting to do some strength training- gotta get back into that!) The body fat scale picked up on this change...

Which type do you have? Omron?

I have the Omron Body Fat Monitor and Scale model HBF-40. It is pretty useless for body fat readings and I really even wonder if is using anything other than weight to predict fat %. If I get on the scale with a 10 pound weight it will give me the same fat % that it told me when I actually weighed 10 pounds heavier.

I have the handheld one and it works pretty well as far as tracking changes. As far as accuracy, from what I've read if you do the test right (meaning your arms are 90 degrees from your body, feet shoulder length apart), they are about as accurate as a fat caliper when done with someone who knows how to properly do them.

I have the handheld Omron BF monitor. Since I started in January, I have only lost nine pounds, but I have lost inches. The Omron monitor has registered a change in my body composition. I started at like 46%, but now I'm at 39%. I can't vouch for the accuracy since I have nothing to compare it to. Just my two cents. :)

I recently got a "Seca" brand one. I read a lot of articles before I ordered one. I don't have the very best one but I also didn't buy the cheapest because one article I read said that you sort of get what you pay for- that the cheapest ones are the least accurate.

I can't say how well it has worked yet because I've been sick and not able to hit the gym as hard as I'd hoped. I do know that it's important to track this stuff. . about a year and a half ago I was about 10 pounds heavier than now, but I was able to do 5 to 8 pull-ups, I could bench more, do more in the gym in general, do heavier weights. So if I get back to that I am sure I'll weigh more and I don't want to be just measuring pounds, that would be stupid.

My Fitness Pal should have a Body Fat ticker, not just a pounds one.

I own one and I've been pretty concerned about its results lately. I try to measure myself every day under consistent conditions in order to get the best results possible and track trends/changes. I haven't lost a single fraction of a percentage poitn of body fat in 3 weeks, which is pretty alarming. Either I really need to change the way I'm doing things or the method of measurement is imperfect. During the same period, I've lost an inch off my belly and half an inch off my waist, so I'm worried that it's both. I have tried to shake up my diet and exercise routine a little bit to add more strength training, more moderate cardio, and more veggies. We'll see.
