I want one that's works well, but isn't too expensive! Which one do you recommend?

I have a Garmin FR60 and I absolutely love it, but Garmin's can easily be over $100. A lot of people recommend Polar and I believe they're a little cheaper. Whatever you get, be sure it has a chest strap. And remember, these are one of those items that you get what you pay for.

I too have a Garmin FR60. You can get it for about $100 or so if you look around. It comes with a nice Heart Rate Chest Strap and a foot pod for running. It will also communicate with a Garmin Bike Cadence/Speed Sensor. Actually it is pretty nice.

I have a Polar F6 that I got used off Amazon Marketplace, about $60. Not sure how long the batteries will last, and I hear they're costly to replace. Before buying an HRM, I would suggest finding out if you can change the batteries yourself. Other than the battery situation, I love my Polar and would highly recommend it. Hope you find one you like!

This is what I have...I bought it for myself on March 20th...my birthday....it was the best gift I ever bought myself...it was worth the money....my workouts have been stronger and you become so much more in touch with your own body....

90 bucks....must be US :-) Here in Canada it was 130 plus all our crazy taxes....

    So worth it!!!!!

This might be a silly question but why is it better to have the chest strap? I'm also thinking about getting one but not sure what's best. I saw one that looked just like a watch. I don't know if it has the chest strap.

I also have a Polar FT4. I love it. The computer is a little clunky to wear as an everyday watch but I've found I can put it through a belt loop or stick it in my pocket and it works just the same as if it were on my wrist. The machines at my gym pick up the readings from the transmitter on the chest strap. Just make sure you unsnap the transmitter when you're not tracking your workout. If it isn't snapped, it isn't using battery power. You can change the batteries in either the computer or the transmitter, no problem.

I like that it stores up to ten work outs. I can strap it on in the morning, do my run, then stop. Do another run at noon, stop. Go to the gym later in the afternoon, then stop. When I get to sit down I can enter all three workouts into MFP.

I also like the pause function. Sometimes I get interrupted in the middle of a workout, cool down, and then go back to it later. I can then continue the workout (on the computer/watch), and later log the total of the two disjointed parts.

I do a lot of work outdoors; gardening, raking, picking rocks, building terraces, etc. I never believed the calorie burns given on some online sites but I do now. I was shocked to learn just how many calories I was actually burning - my calorie intake was not nearly high enough. Now that I can accurately track calories burned, i'm starting to drop weight much more quickly.

I have a Polar FT7 and love it!! it was around a hundred dollars, but worth every penny!

It's better to have a chest strap because it keeps continuous track of your heart rate, how fast it goes up, how long it stays up, how fast it goes back down, etc........that has a huge impact on the calories you burn.

If you just do a wrist band, you have to keep touching it to imput your heart rate and it then assumes that the heart rate is the same until you touch it again. Not as accurate AT ALL>

They are very comfortable to wear, really! :)

i have the polar ft7. i love it. there is an ft4 that is cheaper and i've heard it's really good as well. whichever you get, i would recommend getting one that has a chest strap because i find those to be more accurate. i have one that doesn't have a chest strap and the readings are all over the place sometimes. good luck to you!
  • I have the garmin FR60 as well, with heart rate mon. and foot pod! LOVE IT!! I use it for weight training, circuit training and then when I run outside it tells me my pace, how many miles I have run, calories, time, how fast I ran each mile, HR, etc. It also comes with an ANT stick that can download all your info from each workout to the gamin website. I got it all at amazon.com...I have tried several watches and this one is by far the best.
