Now that i'm working out a lot more i'm trying to eat at least 1200 calories a day (not quite working out but i'm trying) and it's really hard to stay under my sugar goal of 29 g.

history: I'm insulin resistant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin_resistance) and taking a low-dosage of metformin daily. i eat VERY few processed foods and cook fairly healthy. I usually go over my daily protien reccommendation and i'm almost always under for carbs ... it's the sugar that i'm having issues with.

if i have a banana w/ my lunch and an apple as a snack later in the day that 26g RIGHT THERE and i'm pretty much at my daily limit. i don't want to deprive myself of fruit ...

Subtract all of the natural sugars out, and that's your real sugar intake number. It makes sense once you do it. :) Good luck!

Don't worry too much about natural sugars that come from the fruits, vegetables and milk you consume. The sugar goal is mainly for refined sugar, which you really shouldn't eat at all. So watch out for any sugar that is added to foods like yogurt, bread, etc. If the food is in its natural state and it has a little sugar, it isn't a big deal. Don't go crazy of course, but you don't need to be super strict and cut out fruit or anything like that.

DO worry about natural sugars too. In the body glucose is glucose and fructose is fructose. If you want to lose weight in a hurry, keep that sugar number down low - yes, deprive yourself of fruit for a while. You'll live. If you're only eating veggies and no processed food - I assure you, your sugar number will be quite low. Eat all the meat/fish/eggs/poultry/leafy veggies you want and skip anything else. It's actually really easy to do, and you will get lean - I promise.

Right now the only refined sugars i'm getting are from my twice-a-week Fiber 1 cereal breakfast :) oh, and my daily 1 glass of red wine with dinner. hey, i'm European, i don't think we can have dinner without wine ;p

You could reduce sugars by switching your cereal for oatmeal porridge. If you make it watery, you don't need milk but you may wish to try it with soya milk.

The way to keep your sugars low is to eat only those foods which are naturally low in sugar and nothing else. I would think you would want to spread your sugars out through the day, as well. So not eating a whole apple in one sitting, and combining your sugar intake with fat and protein to lower it's impact on your blood sugars and maximizing your body's ability to utilize the rise in blood sugar for a longer period of time, diminishing the crash that can bring on cravings and binges.

Your brain needs sugar to function, but eating a diet that would deprive your brain of needed food is virtually impossible if you're eating 5-7 servings of vegetables a day.

Your doctor should be able to give you some guidance
