Bad Coconut??

I got a fresh coconut planning to use the coconut meat to make a dessert for Easter.
Well I decided to crack it open tonight. I thought I would make myself a smoothie for breakfast tomorrow with coconut water, fresh pineapple and vanilla protein powder.
Anyhow, I broke open my coconut to find that almost half of it was bruised and a small part had started to grow mold.
If I cut away the bad parts, can I still use the other parts?
And how can a person tell a good coconut from a bad one? Its not like a bruised apple where it shows up on the surface.

I've always been shown it's ok to 'eat around' the mold. My mom did it, my grandma... but all the folks on my boyfriends side of the family tend to toss foods that have gone bad even just a little. I think you will be ok to eat around it.
I have NO idea how to check what ones are good or bad. I bought a coconut in Feb and it was disgusting and had barely any meat at all. I think it was too young? I wish I knew how to look for the good ones, I love coconut!0 -
As long as the food is not porous (like bread), you are perfectly safe to cut out the bad parts and eat the rest. Hope that helps.0

I don't think I have ever had a fresh coconut.0 -
Most times coconuts on the grocer's shelves are months to a year old! If it's got the brown husk removed (wrapped in plastic) or still has the outer hust with the three dents on the top; SHAKE IT! If it sounds like it has liquid in it, try and judge how much. the longer it has sat on the shelf, the less liquid inside. Also check it for weight per/size. The heavier/denser it feels, the fresher it's going to be. As far as molding, I might nibble the stuff farthest away and see if the taste has transferred. Be wary of the way mold roots in foods.0

Coconuts last for ages, it's totally fine to eat around it. I'm always the first to experience digestive upset, but this doesnt even bug me. When coconut goes REALLY bad, you'll know it!! It becomes slimy (really slimy!), dark coloured, and smells horrid. You're good! Your coconut is just maturing :laugh:0
