What is a "Masters" award given for in a 5K?

I know someone that was given one. His time was nothing great, and it was his first one. Just wondered as there were other awards for best times. Same thing with "Best Overall". How is that different from having the best time?
Thanks!
Thanks!

'Masters' is usually for older age groups, sometimes you will see a 'Grand Masters' too. Masters may be runners over 40, Grand Master for runners over 50.0

Do all runners over 40 get one? There is a "best time" category for 40-49, but a Masters and Overall as well.0

Maybe in this case 'Masters' was 50+, it can vary by race. I would assume the 'Overall' is the best time overall, regardless of division.0

masters runners are usually those over 40 - is it possible he was the fastest person over 40?
he would likely would have won his age group as well (wouldn't make sense any other way)0
