I've been using Polar HRMs for the past few years. They're the absolute best for heart rate monitoring. I've tried Garmin also, and while the GPS features are nice for running and cycling, I haven't found the calorie calculations to be as accurate as Polar. The Polar FT4 is simple and fairly inexpensive. I got mine from Zappos for $90 with free overnight shipping. Also found it on Amazon for the same price but really wanted it quick. Zappos! I have been very pleased with it.
