So, I have to say that i hate running, something about my feet hitting the pavement makes me want to pull my hairs out. But with that said, i have to include it in my workout regimens. I am a sprinter and not an endurance runner and i need to know how i can build my courage to start running, or what steps to build my endurance up so I can do a 5k by July. Any help and sugestions would be gretly appreciated. ;0)

give the couch to 5k program a looksie. i just completed my first 5k this past weekend, and it was this program that got me there. it's supposed to take 9 weeks, but i had to repeat some of them. just feel free to modify as you need - it's a great guide to get you there. good luck!

Couch to 5k will do it! I was never a runner. I am almost done with the program!

Another C25K grad here... now working on my first 10k and I love it! You can download podcasts from Podrunner Intervals. They guide you through the workouts really well. Good luck!

Agreed, Couch to 5k (C25K). There are several different topics about it and lots of different helpful tools for it as well.
The key is to go at your own pace, it is a 9 week program but if you have to repeat weeks, that's OK. The goal is getting healthier and being able to run a 5K, it takes some of us longer to get to that goal.
I originally started last fall but gave up after the second week. I started again 7 weeks ago and although I had to repeat a week, the progress is remarkable.
I hope you decide to give it a try. Good luck!

I second this suggestion! I hate running, too, but it worked for me a few years back.

I hated running when I started. lungs burn. feels like my heart is jumping out of my chest. Knee hurts, feet hurt. Sometimes my hip gets a pinched nerve... BUT I make myself do it. I force myself to push through... and I just ran 5 miles for the first time.

The best thing about running is how fast your body will get used to it and you will notice it gets easier within a few weeks. Don't give up!! you can do it!!

Also, run slowly at first so you don't wear out too quickly. It will feel weird to be starting slow if you are used to sprinting, but you will be able to go longer. Slow your run if you need to, but don't stop running. When I am having a hard time exercising, i just tell myself I will do (X) miles, and not worry about the time, just as long as I finish that goal. So here I am about to leave. I want to do 6 miles today. See if I can beat my record i set earlier this week.
