so last night i was doing turbofire hiit 15 and yea it was a lil later than i normally workout and apparently the old man below me was not happy with this lol.. usually he says nothing and in fact always has music up loud but anyway i guess he was going to bed so while i was jumping around and such he began to knock on his ceiling/ my floor. and it led me to wondering what could i do to minimize the noise/ and or shaking caused by a workout like that in an apartment.. i know i'm not the only person with this problem so give me some tips

I am also in a apartment 3rd floor to be exact, wish I had some good suggestions but what I do is. In the evening after work I workout in my bedroom since most people are still up hanging out in there living room or whatever. For my morning workouts which start at 5 I workout in the living room while the neighbors are sleep in their bedroom.

Not much you can do. Most home workouts make noise. Best thing to do is to ask the neighbors when the best time for you to do it is. Maybe you can work it out and find when they are not home or if there is a time when they are willing to deal with the noise.

I'm moving into an apartment in July and I'm wondering the same thing!
  • Back in cali when I was on the top floor I would call the neighbor below me n let him know I was gonna workout n to make sure it wasn't gonna to disturb him, it was a pain but we had an understanding, but now everytime I move I will only get an apartment if I'm on the bottom...way less stress for me :)

I feel your pain. The walls in my house are paper-thin.
The best advice I can think of is to keep your core tight to try and tread lightly. I used to dance, so I go into "dancer mode" where I barely touch the floor. It's even more exhausting, but actually improves the workout.
Also maybe do the workout earlier if you can.

There are also foamy things that you can install under the carpet to improve shock absorption. I don't know the name nor exactly what it is, but my neighbor installed it upstairs and it keeps the floor from creaking and shaking.

If you can get a lower level apartment. Most of them have solid floors so less noise.

Frankly, I feel apartment dwellers MUST be Respectful to other. I used to live in an apt and I have had it both ways, and it IS BAD when you feel that YOUR space is being Invaded with Noise. Sometimes you may just have to forgo THAT TYPE of Exercise and opt for something more dwelling friendly at that time of night (I'm thinking after 9:30 PM .) There are "On-Demand" workouts, cycling or treadmills, floor and bands and/or weights, sit-ups/push-ups...

Are your floors carpet or hardwood?
I lived on a second floor apartment and tended to work out rather early in the AM, I don't know if my downstairs neighbor did not hear me/wake up, or what, but I tended to try to do most of my jumping around on a fairly thick rug/pad and practiced landing softly.
(I did the same workout on an upper level when I was visiting my family and was asked to refrain while others were asleep...erf!) If your dwelling has a bedroom/separate living room, it might be worth figuring out the layout of your below stairs neighbor and try to not work out over where he is trying to sleep?

Granted the other option I had at the time was that I had a half floor above the main level...I would go up there to do the jumping things as it gave me a whole level to buffer noise between my and the downstairs people. (I like living on the upper levels, but I do try to be considerate of my neighbors.)

    Good luck!
....and if you are going to do A LOT of jumping/tap dancing/pounding on the floor, aim for a ground level apartment - probably the least hassle.

If I work out early in the morning or late at night I do a workout without too much jumping or I will use the modified versions that do not use the jumping. I save HIIT workouts for straight after work as it is only about 6.30pm then.

I have noisy neighbors on top of me and on the bottom. When I do Turbo Fire and Chalene says wake up you neighbors, I make sure I do just that...lol...they always wake me up. I live on the 2nd floor...uuuggh!

What about following Allie, she does the modified versions of each move and doesn't do any jumping. You can still give major intensity without the jumping. I follow her because I can't jump yet so I know. Try that!
