Hey so I am going over my mothers for Easter and I am told to bring Cheesecake like I always do for any holiday. Well I am not Bringing a Cheesecake for anyone else I am making one that me and my husband can eat. I am making a low fat sugar free one. A regular cake that would of made has 545 cal a slice and the one I'm going to make is 180 a slice.

Sorry for the vent !

Can you buy a frozen one for everyone else? Like the sara lee kind? I'm also making a skinny cheesecake, but bringng another dessert for those who dont want that.

I don't think it's wrong. You're making something healthy. I've made gluten and sugar free dishes for pot lucks and have never heard any complaints :)

Not wrong at all, if they don't like it they don't have to eat it :)
I'm actually interested in that recipe!! :D

I don't think it is wrong of you. I told my family right out that for now on when they ask me to bring food, it would be heathly, lowfat and low calorie. They did not care as long as it was tasty good.

I think that's a great Idea...everyone needs a reality check with nutrition. Show them it can still taste good.

Vent? I think what you are doing is wonderful! I'm assuming your mother knows that you are trying to eat healthy... so of course your contribution to the meal will be low fat. If your family doesn't eat it ... save me a piece! lol

I love making lowfat/healthier desserts and bringing them to events. Sometimes I bring a little strawberry glaze of some kind for people who want more sweet but if it tastes good who cares how many cals it has!

Cheesecake is never wrong. EVER. Now don't let me hear you talk like that again.

Also, the cheesecake goddesses would like you to post the recipe.

(also, what they don't know won't hurt them. I make chili for work functions with soy and there is not a person in the office who knows it's low fat/low cal.)

I am using all fat free or the 1/3 fat cream cheese

normal cream cheese has 100 cal a serv. and the 1/3 fat is 70 cal a serv.

How would that be wrong? If you don't tell them, they probably won't even know the difference.
  • they probably won't even notice the difference if you don't tell them!
and yes please do post the recipe! cheesecake is my weakness:love:
  • NO!! You're not wrong! I bring healthy dishes like that to all my family get togethers! You're trying to be healthy, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with sticking with that on the holidays. I bet they'll still like the healthy version - my family hardly ever even notices!

hey...if you don;t tell them, they might not even know...although my family all claim they can the difference ;-)

I am taking a veggie tray...and then individual servings of pepper strips and hummus and a few other goodies for myself so I can avoid the chips and dips...and the desserts

did you tell her and she still said to bring it? I mean, it's fine to bring it, but if it's the only dessert, then you might want to give her a heads up, but of course if your house is like ours, and there's 8 gazillion desserts around, then I'd just not say anything and see if anyone notices. I mean it's not like you're replacing the main course or something, they'll get over it.

Not wrong at all, you were asked to take a cheesecake and you will be taking one, no problem there

Don't tell them it's healthy. Tell them you're trying a new recipe. Bring an option of strawberry syrup to drizzle on top if they think it's bland.

it's only wrong if you only bring enough for you and the hubby, while everyone stands around and watches you eat it.

i think you'll be surprised at how many people want a 'healthier' dessert. :)

Not wrong at all, it's great to bring a healthier option.
However I think you should let people know if you have used artificial sweeteners in it - some people don't/can't eat them.

    Thank you everyone !!!
  • i think a healthier dessert is perfect! When i went to Thanksgiving with the extended family i offered to do the nibbly-munchies before hand. I think a few were nervous lol... I brought:

water crackers with laughing cow light cheese wedges (a few varieties)
reduced fat triscuits with 50% reduced fat cheddar
organic tortilla chips with homemade salsa and Wholly Queso
a veggie tray with a homemade dip made with greek yogurt
    pita chips and hummus
    a fruit salad

everyone was happily nibbling right up till meal time and thensome, so i guess they didn't mind afterall LOL.

oh this is so funny because last night I was at the store arguing with myself because I am in charge of my mom's traditional southwestern sweet potato (and it is amazing too) dish that includes sour cream, heavy cream and Velveeta- my mom refuses to do low fat or non fat dairy and I don't even want to consider the cals in this dish that is beyond tempting. Even a tablespoon would probably put me over, lol. So I am going to do the unthinkable- low fat sour cream and low fat half and half but I will keep Velveeta cause that is one you can't fake- maybe just less Velveeta. I hope i don't get in to much trouble! good luck with your conundrum and Happy Easter all!
